West Bank Economy Faces Severe Contraction Amid Checkpoint Expansion

Escalating military closures are fragmenting the West Bank, causing significant losses for local industries and raising urgent questions about the region's economic stability.

The Palestinian economy in the West Bank is experiencing a profound contraction, driven by an expanding network of military checkpoints that severely restricts movement and commerce. According to Al Jazeera English, this situation has moved beyond temporary disruption, evolving into a structural crisis that threatens the viability of local businesses and the daily livelihoods of residents.

The impact is most visible in sectors reliant on rapid logistics, where delays at border crossings have led to significant waste and financial loss. As the density of security measures increases, particularly around key urban centers, the cost of doing business has risen sharply, forcing companies to cut staff and abandon markets that were previously accessible.

Logistics Disruption in Dairy Sector

In the village of Rujeib, southeast of Nablus, a dairy factory established in 2022 illustrates the severity of these logistical challenges. The company, which relies on refrigerated trucks for raw milk distribution, has been forced to park two of its vehicles due to a sharp decline in market demand and mobility issues. A routine shipment of raw milk was recently delayed at a military checkpoint, a delay that proved fatal for the product's viability.

The delays have extended to two to three hours just to exit Nablus, with waits of up to four hours reported at specific checkpoints like Awarta. For perishable goods, these time losses are catastrophic. The factory manager noted that ten tonnes of milk were wasted due to these bottlenecks, a direct result of the inability to move goods efficiently through the increasingly fragmented landscape.

Consequently, the company has seen its sales drop by 30 to 40 percent, compelling it to lay off at least 12 workers. The manager explained that the high costs of transport and the inability to pass through checkpoints have made it impossible to serve customers outside the immediate city area, effectively shrinking the company's operational scope and revenue base.

Expansion of Security Infrastructure

The proliferation of these barriers is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of expansion across the occupied territories. According to the Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission, there are approximately 925 checkpoints and military gates across the West Bank, with 147 located specifically in the Nablus governorate. This density creates a near-permanent siege effect, where entry to the city is almost always subject to inspection or delay.

This infrastructure serves to maintain the ongoing occupation and protect settlements, a status that is considered illegal under international law. The expansion of these checkpoints coincides with a significant reduction in overall transport movement, with estimates suggesting a drop of more than 50 percent since late 2023. This fragmentation effectively divides Palestinian land, hindering the free flow of goods and people.

Broader Economic Consequences

The economic fallout extends far beyond individual businesses, contributing to a broader recession in the region. The suspension of work permits for Palestinian workers in Israel has exacerbated unemployment, while rising production costs force companies to raise prices in a market where consumer spending power is already diminished. This combination of high input costs and low demand creates a vicious cycle that stifles economic growth.

Business owners report that they cannot pass these increased costs onto consumers without risking a further collapse in sales. This squeeze on profit margins leads to job cuts and reduced investment, deepening the economic contraction. The situation has created a fragile environment where even small disruptions in supply chains can lead to significant financial losses and social instability.
