India Bond Yields Hover Near 7.05% Ahead of 280 Billion Rupee Auction

Indian government bond yields held steady near 7.05% as the market awaits the cutoff rate for a 280 billion rupee debt sale.
The benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond yield stood at 7.0497% in early trade. This represented a slight increase from the previous close of 7.0463%. Traders are watching the auction cutoff for the next directional move.
New Delhi will raise 280 billion rupees through a bond sale later in the day. The sale includes the liquid 15-year paper. Market sentiment remains cautious despite potential demand for the new issue.
RBI drains liquidity from banking system
The Reserve Bank of India announced open market debt sales worth 1 trillion rupees for September. This is the first such operation in nine years. The central bank drained liquidity equivalent to 0.2% of total bank deposits on Thursday.
The RBI plans to sell 250 billion rupees of bonds on Monday. A similar amount is scheduled for sale on September 28. These measures aim to strengthen monetary policy transmission.
Excess liquidity can weaken the impact of policy rate changes. Banks may reduce borrowing at the policy rate if they hold ample funds. This can delay the rise in lending rates for the public.
Rate hike expectations firm up
Expectations for an Indian rate hike have hardened following the Federal Reserve's move. Many traders now expect the RBI to raise its policy repo rate by 25 basis points on October 7. The US 10-year Treasury yield hit 5% after the Fed's decision.
Market pricing shows a near 50% chance of another Fed rate hike in October. The probability rises to 88% for the December meeting. These global shifts directly influence domestic bond pricing dynamics.
Auction results to guide direction
A primary dealer noted that the market is in a bearish mode. Even with decent auction demand, yields may not ease below the 7.02% to 7.03% range. The outcome of the 280 billion rupee sale will be a key indicator.
Traders remain focused on the fresh debt supply for near-term cues. The balance between liquidity absorption and auction demand will determine the next move. The current trading session reflects this cautious stance.
