Automated payments replace manual subscriptions
The x402 standard uses the HTTP 402 response code for checkout. A service sends price instructions and the agent signs the payment.
This structure eliminates the need for monthly subscriptions or manual account creation. Agents can purchase single datasets as needed for reports.
Standards backed by major tech firms
Coinbase created the x402 protocol in 2025. It is now managed by a Linux Foundation-backed organization.
Members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and Amazon Web Services. Solana and XRP Ledger also support this payment standard.
Preproduction testing precedes mainnet launch
Cardano Foundation engineers built the client and server software for this release. The initial version supports TypeScript programming.
The facilitator completed a transaction on Cardano's pre-production network. It has not yet operated on mainnet for commercial use.
CoinDesk reports that developers can now begin integrating Cardano into their stacks. Python support is planned for a future software update.
