Solana Gains 41.5% in August, Outpacing Nasdaq by 10x

Solana delivered a 41.5% monthly gain in August, significantly outperforming the Nasdaq's 3.9% rise. This sharp rebound reflects a recovery in risk appetite rather than a confirmed shift to a broad bull market.
Solana recorded a 41.5% increase in August, the strongest performance among major crypto assets. Bitcoin followed with a 25.0% gain, while Ethereum rose 32.6%. These returns vastly exceeded the Nasdaq's 3.9% growth and the S&P 500's 2.6% advance over the same period.
Gold also strengthened, posting a 9.9% monthly gain. In contrast, real estate values declined by 4.0%. Global bonds faced continued pressure during the month. The crypto sector reclaimed its position as the most elastic segment of global risk assets, though this volatility does not confirm a permanent trend reversal.
Year-to-date returns remain negative
Despite the August rally, year-to-date performance for digital assets remains in the red. Bitcoin sits at a -10.3% YTD return, while Ethereum is down 17.0%. Solana shows a similar -17.3% decline since the start of the year.
Traditional markets have fared better over the longer term. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have posted positive YTD returns of 12.3% and 13.5% respectively. Commodities have surged by 28.9% year-to-date. Analysts view the recent crypto gains as valuation repair following earlier drawdowns rather than a full capital rotation into core positions.
Institutional inflows support market recovery
Spot ETFs provided the primary source of buying pressure in August. US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately $3.5 billion in net inflows, the highest single-month figure since October 2025. Spot Ethereum ETFs saw roughly $1.8 billion in concurrent inflows.
Traditional finance entities continue to integrate digital assets into their portfolios. BlackRock expanded the size of its tokenized money market funds, and Charles Schwab extended its crypto service offerings. The issuance volume of tokenized stocks and real-world assets has also increased, indicating widening compliant capital channels.
Federal Reserve decision is the key catalyst
Market attention now shifts to the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on September 15 and 16. US August CPI rose 3.4% year-on-year, with core inflation showing notable stickiness. Hawkish remarks from incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh have influenced market expectations.
The CME FedWatch tool indicates an 85% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike this week. According to GN markets/crypto (en-US), if the Fed proceeds with the hike or maintains a hawkish stance, crypto assets sensitive to real interest rates may face short-term downward pressure. Conversely, an easing of policy would provide additional liquidity support for the sector.
