Annual inflation drops to 6.17 percent in August

Romania's annual inflation rate fell to 6.17 percent in August, down from 8.16 percent in July. The National Institute of Statistics reported a significant slowdown in price growth across key sectors.

The annual inflation rate in Romania declined to 6.17 percent in August. This figure marks a drop from the 8.16 percent recorded in July. The National Institute of Statistics published these data points on August 31, 2026.

Consumer prices rose by 0.22 percent compared to the previous month. The cumulative increase since the start of the year stands at 4.6 percent. The average inflation rate over the last twelve months remains at 9.5 percent.

Sector breakdown shows mixed results

Services prices increased by 11.28 percent year-on-year. Non-food goods rose by 6.36 percent over the same period. Food prices showed the smallest increase at 2.62 percent.

Coffee prices jumped 15.2 percent compared to August 2025. Eggs followed with a 10.88 percent rise. Beef prices increased by 8.5 percent in the annual comparison.

Energy costs drive non-food inflation

Diesel prices surged 34.61 percent year-on-year. Petrol costs rose by 25.49 percent in the same timeframe. Both fuels saw increases of over 6 percent compared to July.

The harmonised index of consumer prices recorded an annual rate of 6.35 percent. The average rate of change for this index over the last twelve months was 8.6 percent.

Central bank revises forecast upward

The National Bank of Romania raised its end-2026 inflation forecast to 6.1 percent. The previous estimate was 5.5 percent. Governor Mugur Isarescu presented these revised figures in August.

The bank now expects inflation to reach 3.4 percent by the end of 2027. This is an increase from the prior forecast of 2.9 percent. The data is cited by GN markets/inflation (en-US) as a key economic indicator.
