Czech Inflation Rises to 1.9% in August

Czech consumer prices accelerated to 1.9% year-on-year in August 2026, driven by rising fuel costs that outweighed deep drops in food prices.
Consumer prices in Czechia increased by 0.3% month-on-month in August 2026. The annual inflation rate accelerated to 1.9%, up 0.2 percentage points from July. The Czech Statistical Office published these figures on September 10, 2026. This marks a slight uptick in the broader price trend for the region.
Transport costs were the primary driver of monthly price growth. Fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment rose by 7.2% during the month. Seasonal demand also pushed prices in recreation, sport, and culture up by 3.4%. These increases were partially offset by declines in food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Fuel Costs Drive Monthly Gains
Diesel prices reached an average of 44.98 Czech crowns per litre in August. This is the highest value recorded since October 2022. Pavla Sediva, head of the Consumer Price Statistics Unit, noted this significant increase. She stated that rising fuel costs were partly offset by falling food prices.
Year-on-year, transport prices rose by 9.6%. Fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment increased by 26.2%. This compares to a 16.8% growth rate in July. Housing costs also contributed to the monthly rise, with actual rentals up 0.4%.
Food Prices Show Significant Declines
Food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded price drops in August. Fruits fell by 4.4% and vegetables dropped by 1.9%. Potatoes specifically declined by 9.4% on a monthly basis. Pork prices fell by 3.1% and poultry decreased by 2.8% compared to the previous month.
Year-on-year declines in food prices were even more pronounced. Pork prices fell by 23.7% and poultry dropped by 8.3%. UHT semi-skimmed milk prices decreased by 24.6% over the year. Butter prices fell sharply by 38.8% compared to August 2025. These drops helped cushion the overall inflation rate.
