Elon Musk asserts that a 15% annual US GDP growth scenario will materialize once humanoid robots achieve volume production.

Elon Musk stated that a 15% annual growth rate for the US gross domestic product is certain once humanoid robots reach mass production. This claim links artificial intelligence with physical automation to drive economic expansion. The projection implies the economy would double every 4.5 years.

Musk responded to a post highlighting Anthropic's economic scenario explorer on Wednesday. The scenario models extreme AI productivity in knowledge work. It assumes AI performs nearly all such tasks autonomously. This condition requires recursively self-improving algorithms.

Anthropic projects massive GDP increase

Anthropic estimates US GDP could reach 44.4 trillion dollars by 2030 under this scenario. This figure is 32.4% higher than the baseline without AI. The company notes this is a conditional model, not a forecast. It relies on rapid adoption of autonomous AI systems.

Labor's share of output would fall to 45.2% from roughly 60%. Capital would capture 54.8% of the total output. Knowledge-worker wages would decline in this model. Unemployment would rise beyond typical recessionary levels.

Tesla prepares Optimus for production

Tesla is installing first-generation production lines for its Optimus robot. This follows the company's first-quarter update in April. The space formerly used for Model S and Model X in Fremont has been converted. Musk described Optimus as potentially Tesla's biggest product.

Musk cautioned that initial production will be extremely slow. The robot is designed for unsafe or repetitive tasks. Anthropic's model does not include hyper-capable robots. This omission makes the robot angle significant for Musk's thesis.

Survey data supports moderate growth

Anthropic surveyed 10,980 Americans to gauge economic assumptions. Most respondents aligned with a substantial growth scenario. This implies GDP about 10% higher by 2030. Unemployment would sit near 5% in this case. About 10% of responses matched the extreme case.

Musk also predicted AI and robots will more than double the global economy. He stated this would happen in less than 10 years. This broader claim extends the specific US GDP projections. The source for this analysis is GN markets/growth (en-US).
