Heat Pump Sales Outpace Gas Furnaces by 32 Percent in Early 2026

US market growth exceeds subsidy impact
Heat pump sales in the US doubled over the last 15 years. Lucas Davis, an energy economist at UC Berkeley, noted that the market is strong enough to stand without tax credits. Buyers previously received up to $2,000 in credits for installation. The demand persists despite the removal of this financial support.
In Massachusetts, startup Reservoir raised $8 million in seed funding. The company plans to expand from 100 local installations to 1,000 by the end of 2027. Reservoir develops ultra-efficient water heaters that predict hot water demand. Their systems store energy and detect plumbing leaks to reduce waste.
European adoption rates lead global trends
Norway has equipped 60 percent of its buildings with heat pumps. Sweden and Finland have installed these systems in over 40 percent of their building stock. These figures challenge the notion that heat pumps are unsuitable for cold climates. Global sales increased by almost 15 percent in 2021.
In 2021, heat pumps met approximately 10 percent of global space-heating needs. The sales growth rate was double the average of the previous decade. Countries in the European Union continue to increase uptake. Researchers are improving technology to make units cheaper and more efficient.
Efficiency gains reduce carbon emissions
Heating in buildings is responsible for 4 gigatonnes of carbon emissions annually. This accounts for around 10 percent of global emissions. One-third of the European Union’s natural gas demand is for building heating. Heat pumps transfer heat rather than generating it.
Modern heat pumps are three to four times more energy efficient than gas boilers. They use technology similar to refrigerators to extract and amplify heat. When powered by renewable energy, these systems become green heating solutions. This helps shield users from fossil fuel price volatility.
