Michigan regular unleaded gas reached $4.89 per gallon on Friday. Diesel prices set a new state record at $6.67. Daily increases continued throughout the week.

Regular unleaded gasoline in Michigan reached $4.89 per gallon on Friday. This figure sits just three cents below the state’s all-time record of $5.22. The price rose daily from $4.31 on Monday. Diesel fuel set a new Michigan record at $6.67 per gallon on Friday. This follows a steady climb from $6.14 on Monday.

Local averages in several Michigan counties now range between $4.90 and $4.99. The national average for regular gas reached $4.46 on Friday. The national average for diesel hit a record $6.44. These figures reflect broad market pressures across the country.

Daily Price Increases Persist

AAA data shows consistent daily gains for both fuel types. Regular gas increased by 12 cents between Monday and Tuesday. The rise continued at 11 cents on Wednesday. Thursday saw a jump to $4.75. Friday closed at $4.89. Diesel prices followed a similar trajectory. The cost rose from $6.14 to $6.67 over five days.

Some stations in Southeast Michigan posted diesel prices at $7.09. This exceeds the AAA local average. The discrepancy highlights regional variation. Drivers in the Great Lakes region face ongoing price hikes. Analysts note the risk extends to neighboring states.

Tax Proposals Face Limitations

Legislators have proposed suspending federal and state fuel taxes. None of these measures would return prices to 2025 levels. The federal gas tax stands at 18.3 cents per gallon. Diesel carries a federal tax of 24.3 cents per gallon. Michigan state taxes add 52.4 cents per gallon to the cost of gas.

A Congressional report noted that tax suspension would provide limited relief. Gas prices would still rise by over $1.30 per gallon. The state allows a bypass for summer blend requirements. This waiver does not offset the current price surge. The federal tax has remained unchanged since 1956.
