GasBuddy data from 4,081 stations shows the national average rose 18.5 cents to $4.44 per gallon. This marks a 34.4-cent increase from last month and a $1.30 rise compared to the previous year.
Regional price spreads widen
The gap between the cheapest and most expensive stations in Virginia reached $2.40 per gallon. The lowest price recorded was $3.59, while the highest hit $5.99 on Sunday.
Neighboring regions experienced varied changes, with West Virginia seeing a 24.6-cent jump to $4.38 per gallon. Roanoke prices rose 6.8 cents to $4.14, while Richmond remained nearly flat at $4.16.
Refinery issues drive national spikes
Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy attributes the surge to refinery problems in the Great Lakes region. States like Michigan and Illinois saw prices climb more than 30 cents per gallon this week.
Diesel prices also increased across every state, with five states recording gains exceeding 50 cents per gallon. The national average for diesel now stands at $6.49 per gallon, up 30.7 cents weekly.
Geopolitical risks complicate outlook
Analysts note that strikes on Russian refineries are tightening the global diesel supply. New Houthi attacks and rising tensions with Iran add further uncertainty to future price movements.
