US Stocks Lead Global Gains
The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.61% on Thursday. The S&P 500 gained 1.14% and the Nasdaq advanced 1.69%. US stock indexes opened higher on Friday, continuing the upward momentum from the previous session.
Initial jobless claims in the US fell to 196,000 for the week ending September 12. This figure came in below market estimates, suggesting labor market strength. The 10-year US Treasury yield remained flat at 4.94%.
Central Banks Signal Cautious Policy
The Bank of England kept its policy rate at 3.75%, matching analyst expectations. Six members voted to hold rates, while three supported a 25 basis point hike. The bank plans to reduce its bond portfolio by 46 billion pounds through 2034.
The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%. This move marks the highest level in 31 years. The decision was passed by a seven-to-two vote, indicating internal disagreement. The yen weakened against the US dollar, which rose 0.2% to 157.2.
Inflation Data Shapes Market Outlook
Eurozone consumer prices rose 0.4% month over month and 3.2% year over year. The annual increase was slightly lower than forecasts. US diesel prices hit a record high of 6.40 dollars per gallon, adding to cost pressures.
Japan's August inflation rate came in at 1.9%, below estimates. Asian equity markets traded positively near Friday's close, with South Korea's Kospi rising 2.6%. The Nikkei 225 also gained as technology stocks rebounded.
