The Korea Composite Stock Price Index closed 1.76 percent lower at 6,909.91 on Friday. Rising energy costs and US inflation data drove the sell-off.

Seoul shares ended Friday at 6,909.91, a drop of 1.76 percent. The index opened 3.29 percent lower before narrowing losses. This decline followed overnight drops in US markets triggered by surging oil prices.

Investors focused on upcoming US consumer price index data. Higher energy costs raised concerns about persistent inflation. The Korean won weakened against the US dollar during the session.

Oil Prices Drive Market Volatility

Escalating tensions in the Middle East pushed up global energy costs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6 percent overnight. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.65 percent in response to the same pressures.

Market participants awaited the US inflation report for policy clues. The Federal Reserve's interest rate path remains central to investor sentiment. Energy inflation is a key variable in this equation.

Tech and Auto Stocks Lead Decline

Samsung Electronics fell 3.53 percent to 259,500 won. SK hynix dropped 2.21 percent to 1.81 million won. Hyundai Motor declined 1.67 percent while LG Energy Solution lost 1.37 percent.

SK Innovation suffered the steepest drop among major names. The refiner shed 5.42 percent to close at 144,800 won. These declines reflected broader sector weakness in technology and automotive.

Currency Weakens Amid Risk Aversion

The Korean won traded at 1,345.9 per US dollar by 3:30 p.m. This represented a shift from 1,339.2 won at the previous close. The currency loss aligns with the equity market sell-off.

Trade volume reached 265.92 million shares valued at 19.39 trillion won. Losers outnumbered gainers 473 to 368. According to GN markets/inflation (en-US), individual investors bought a net 1.87 trillion won of stocks. Institutions and foreigners sold a net 1.22 trillion won and 2.29 trillion won, respectively.
