Taiwan's benchmark index reached an all-time high on Tuesday, driven by strong performance in semiconductor stocks and broader AI optimism.

Key points

  • Taiex reached a record intraday high of 48,601.53 points on Tuesday.
  • MediaTek shares rose 7.88 percent while Delta Electronics gained 2.67 percent.
  • Standard Chartered estimates technology makes up 88 percent of the index.

The Taiex index closed at a record intraday level of 48,601.53 points on Tuesday. This milestone marks the highest level reached by the benchmark since its creation. The gain reflects a sustained rally in technology stocks across the market.

Investors reacted positively to recent developments in artificial intelligence on Wall Street. Optimism grew after Meta demonstrated early success with its new AI agent. These developments lifted valuations for key semiconductor manufacturers in Taiwan.

Major chipmakers lead the rally

MediaTek shares climbed by 7.88 percent during the trading session. Delta Electronics advanced by 2.67 percent, adding to the index momentum. TSMC, the largest constituent by market cap, gained 0.40 percent. These three companies represent the core of the index's performance.

The index set this new high approximately three months after its previous record. That prior peak was established in June of this year. The current rise extends the upward trend seen since the start of the year. This growth aligns with the global boom in artificial intelligence hardware.

Semiconductors dominate market composition

Standard Chartered estimates that technology accounts for about 88 percent of the index. The semiconductor industry forms the largest portion of this sector. This concentration makes the index highly sensitive to chip demand. It also highlights Taiwan's critical role in global supply chains.

The country produces more than 90 percent of the world's most advanced chips. These include devices measuring 7 nanometers and below. HSBC data from May shows Taiwan is now the sixth-largest stock market. It overtook Canada to secure this position by market capitalization.

Export data signals sustained demand

Market participants are watching August export orders data closely. UOB expects the indicator to rise by 63.0 percent year-on-year. This follows a 61.9 percent increase recorded in July. Such figures would confirm continued strong demand for AI-related components. This trend supports the recent price gains in the sector.
