Yen Weakens Against Dollar Ahead of Central Bank Decisions

USD/JPY rises toward 154.00 as geopolitical risks and Fed hike expectations drive the dollar higher.
The USD/JPY exchange rate climbed toward the 154.00 level during Asian trading hours. This move reversed part of the previous week's losses. The dollar strengthened against the yen due to renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Traders also increased bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike. The pair remains within a range established over the past week.
Market participants are positioned ahead of critical policy meetings next week. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet on September 15 and 16. The Bank of Japan will convene on September 17 and 18. Recent US inflation data supports the view that the Fed will raise borrowing costs. This hawkish stance boosts demand for the US dollar.
Geopolitical Risks Boost Dollar Demand
Escalating tensions between the US and Iran have increased the geopolitical risk premium. Houthi fighters reported drone and missile attacks on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. An Iranian cargo vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz. A planned regional meeting between Gulf states and Iran was postponed. These events reinforce the US dollar's status as a safe-haven asset.
The safe-haven flows directly support the USD/JPY pair. Investors are moving capital into the dollar amid uncertainty. This dynamic creates headwinds for the Japanese yen. The geopolitical factor adds to the pressure on the yen's value.
BoJ Hike Expectations Limit Yen Decline
Traders have fully priced in a 25-basis-point rate hike by the Bank of Japan. Markets also assign a high probability to a follow-up move in December. BoJ official Kazuyuki Masu noted that underlying inflation is approaching the 2% target. He stated that the policy rate remains below the neutral level. These comments support a hawkish repricing of the BoJ's path.
A stronger yen is expected to cap further gains for the USD/JPY pair. The anticipated tightening by the BoJ provides fundamental support for the currency. This factor acts as a counterbalance to the dollar's strength. The interplay between Fed and BoJ policies will determine the pair's direction.
Technical Levels Define Trading Range
The USD/JPY pair maintains a bearish near-term bias. Prices remain beneath the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level. The 155.30 to 155.20 zone acts as a support breakpoint. A firm recovery above this area would ease bearish pressure.
Immediate support is located at the 50% retracement level of 152.00. Deeper support sits at the 61.8% retracement level of 149.17. A sustained break below 149.17 would expose the 78.6% retracement at 145.14. These levels are critical for the next phase of trading.
GN auto markets/forex: currency markets notes that the yen is one of the most traded currencies globally. Its value depends on Japanese economic performance and BoJ policy. The differential between US and Japanese bond yields also plays a key role. Risk sentiment among traders influences the currency's trajectory. The BoJ's gradual shift from ultra-loose policy has provided recent support for the yen.
