Spartans Rally for Sixth at Folds of Honor
Michigan State’s men's golf team surged on the final day, securing a tie for sixth at American Dunes with a powerful third-round performance.
The wind off Lake Michigan still carried the scent of pine and damp earth as Michigan State’s men’s golf team walked the final fairways of American Dunes Golf Club. It was a day of redemption. After slipping to eighth place following the second round, the Spartans clawed their way back to tie for sixth among fourteen teams. The team posted the third-best round of the day, a 5-under par 283, to finish at 15-under par 849. It was a gritty, physical finish that left little room for doubt. The green grass was immaculate, the sky a pale, clear blue, and the focus absolute.
A Final Round Surge
Georgia Tech dominated from the first tee to the last cup, finishing five shots ahead of the pack. The Spartans, however, found their rhythm on Wednesday. The trajectory was clear: second place after round one, a dip to eighth after round two, and then the bounce. That final-day charge was fueled by consistent putting and aggressive approach shots. The team’s collective effort turned a potentially middling result into a top-tier finish, matching Ohio State for the sixth-place spot. The atmosphere on the course was tense, the silence broken only by the soft thud of clubs striking balls and the rustle of wind through the trees.
Individual Brilliance Shines
Lorenzo Pinili was the standout, firing a 6-under par 65 on Tuesday. It was the best round of his career and the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history. Julian Menser provided steady leadership, closing with a 3-under par 68 to tie for ninth place. His consistency was the anchor for the team. McCoy Biagioli also contributed significantly, posting his second 2-under par 69 to tie for 14th. These individual performances wove together to form a cohesive team effort. The skill level was high, the concentration sharp, and the results undeniable.
Honoring Service Through Sport
This tournament is more than a competition. The Folds of Honor Collegiate was created by MSU coach Casey Lubahn and Lt. Col. Dan Rooney to support those who serve. Since 2007, the organization has awarded nearly 73,000 scholarships totaling over $340 million. The stakes are personal and profound.
