Trainer Mark Casse has rarely shipped his stable to this Mid-Atlantic strip, yet here stands his fourth contender of the year, a three-year-old filly who finds the wider world too crowded and too old. Meanwhile, Late Night Text, now based in New York under trainer Rob Atras, makes her first start off a three-month layoff. Her recent fade as a heavy favorite in the Azalea adds a layer of uncertainty to her bid.

For the local contenders, the turf is familiar ground. Slewperstitus and Just Philtored, both Maryland-bred, have squared off six times in their careers. Slewperstitus, trained by Robert Bailes, arrives from three straight runner-up finishes, suggesting a consistent but elusive form. Just Philtored, however, holds the head-to-head advantage and returns to the dirt for Michael Trombetta.
