It is September 9, 2026, and the Big Sky Conference volleyball teams have just crossed the midpoint of their non-conference schedules. Two weekends of action lie ahead before the true test begins. The air is thick with the hum of preparation, a physical pause before the next wave of competition crashes in.

The rhythm of the season has shifted, moving from the chaotic start of the year to a more focused, strategic phase. Teams are sharpening their edges, testing their limits, and building the momentum needed to carry them into Big Sky territory.
Offensive Powerhouses Dominate the Week
Kalista Lukovich of Eastern Washington exploded onto the scene this weekend, named Offensive Player of the Week for her relentless performance. She registered 60 kills over three matches, a feat that drove the Eagles to a 2-1 record. Her presence on the court was a force of nature, complemented by six blocks and 34 digs. The Eagle crest seemed to vibrate with her every spike.
On the defensive end, Aspen Boice from Idaho State anchored her team’s success. Named Defensive Player of the Week, she averaged nearly five digs per set, totaling 59 digs across the weekend. Her 21 assists and three service aces were the glue holding the Bengals’ 2-1 weekend together. The defensive wall she built was impenetrable, a testament to her grit and precision.
Preseason Favorites Set the Standard
Northern Colorado enters the season as the consensus favorite, a title earned through last year’s Big Sky tournament victory. The Bears’ confidence is bolstered by two preseason All-Conference selections, Alayna Tessena and Nerea Alvarez Jorge. Their poll performance was dominant, with four first-place votes and a league-leading 83 points, narrowly edging out Northern Arizona.
Hanah Stoddard of Northern Arizona headlines the preseason All-Conference Team, tabbed as the MVP by league coaches. Last season, her 461 kills ranked second in the league, a career-best that helped secure the regular-season title. Her defensive prowess, with 376 digs and 24 blocks, makes her a complete threat. The Lumberjacks carry the weight of expectation, but so does their talent.
New Members Shape the League
The Big Sky Conference has grown, welcoming Southern Utah and Utah Tech as new members for the 2026 season. This expansion brings the total number of volleyball squads to 11. For Southern Utah, it is a return to the conference after a nine-year absence. For Utah Tech, it is a historic first season, adding a new dynamic to the competitive landscape.
The 2026 Big Sky Volleyball Championship will be hosted by Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona, from November 23 to 25. This marks the first time the tournament has been held in Flagstaff since 2015. The Lumberjacks earned this right through their regular-season title last fall, setting the stage for a memorable event in the high-altitude desert.
