Cava Group posted strong top-line growth in fiscal Q2, yet margin compression and post-earnings share weakness signal persistent operational headwinds.

Cava Group (CAVA) reported second-quarter fiscal 2026 results showing revenue growth of 31.3% year over year to $368.44 million, exceeding consensus estimates. The company delivered earnings per share of $0.19, a 5.6% beat against the expected $0.18, driven by the addition of 17 net new restaurants and a 9% increase in same-restaurant sales. Despite these positive operational metrics, Cava shares have declined 18.7% since the report, underperforming the broader S&P 500 index.

The post-earnings share drop reflects investor scrutiny of the company’s cost structure. While revenue expanded significantly, restaurant-level profit margins contracted by 60 basis points to 25.7%. This compression was primarily driven by rising food and beverage costs, which increased to 30.0% of revenues, partly due to the launch of the Pomegranate Glazed Salmon dish. Labor costs also rose by 30 basis points to 25.3% of sales, reflecting a 3% wage investment across the workforce.

Unit Expansion Drives Revenue Growth

Cava’s revenue expansion was heavily supported by physical footprint growth. The company ended the quarter with 476 restaurants, a 19.6% year-over-year increase. Contributions from 94 net new openings added during or after the prior year’s second quarter were the primary driver of the 31.3% revenue jump. Average unit volume improved to $3.09 million per year, up from $2.94 million, indicating stronger performance at existing locations.

Same-restaurant sales growth of 9% was fueled by a 5.3% increase in guest traffic. Menu pricing and product mix shifts contributed an additional 3.7 percentage points to this figure. New restaurant productivity remained above 100% of the target, suggesting that recent openings are performing at or above the company’s established benchmarks for initial-year revenue generation.

Operating Costs Pressure Profit Margins

Despite increased restaurant-level profit of 28.1% to $93.81 million, the profit margin decline highlights inefficiencies in the cost base. Food, beverage, and packaging expenses rose by 50 basis points, a direct result of higher input costs for new menu items. Occupancy costs improved by 50 basis points to 6.3% of revenue, partially offsetting the pressure from other operating expenses, which increased by 40 basis points to 12.8% due to a higher mix of third-party delivery orders.

Cash Flow Remains Robust

Cava generated $134.5 million in operating cash flow, a 36.0% increase from the prior year period. After accounting for $89.7 million in capital expenditures for property and equipment, the company produced $44.8 million in free cash flow, more than double the $21.9 million recorded a year earlier. This cash generation provides a strong buffer against the rising operational costs identified in the margin analysis.

Liquidity positions remain solid, with Cava holding $322.8 million in cash and cash equivalents alongside $112.8 million in fixed-income investments. The company has no outstanding borrowings under its $150 million revolving credit facility, leaving it with $149.1 million in available borrowing capacity. According to GN markets/earnings data, this financial stability supports continued expansion despite the temporary margin headwinds.
