Chewy Slides 6% After JPMorgan Downgrade

Chewy shares fell 6% on Friday following a JPMorgan downgrade to Neutral, marking the second rating cut in two days as analysts cite macroeconomic headwinds over company-specific execution issues.
Chewy stock dropped 6% to $19.80 in Friday morning trading after JPMorgan removed the pet retailer from its buy list. This move follows a similar downgrade from Evercore ISI on Thursday, resulting in two consecutive sessions of negative analyst sentiment. The shares are now down 40% year to date, a decline that stands out as the S&P 500 ETF Trust gained 0.79% on the same day.
The pressure is specific to Chewy rather than the broader pet care sector. Peer Petco Health and Wellness slipped 0.6% to $2.42, while Freshpet rose 2% to $66.41. This divergence indicates that investors are reacting to individual analyst notes on Chewy rather than reassessing the entire category's fundamentals.
Analysts Cite Macro Pressures
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth cut the rating to Neutral with a $24 price target, citing persistent macroeconomic pressure on organic growth. Evercore ISI issued a similar In Line rating with a $25 target on Thursday. Both firms noted that while Chewy is executing well on internal initiatives, the external economic environment is limiting overall expansion.
Anmuth acknowledged that Chewy continues to gain market share, outpacing the broader pet market by two to three times. He also noted healthy customer additions and retention. However, he argued that the muted organic growth justifies the rating reduction, isolating the macro backdrop as the primary swing factor rather than any operational failure.
Quality of Earnings Beat
JPMorgan highlighted that Chewy’s second-quarter EBITDA margin topped guidance, but the firm attributed this beat to timing-related and discrete gross-margin benefits. These included $15 million in tariff refunds and other one-time items. Stripping out these discrete benefits reveals a lower-quality result than the headline numbers suggest, reinforcing the skepticism in the downgrade.
The analyst noted that the company’s strong execution is real but insufficient to overcome the broader headwinds. The rating cut reflects a view that the current macro environment will continue to pressure organic growth metrics, regardless of Chewy’s internal efficiency gains or customer loyalty metrics.
Peer Reaction Remains Contained
The split reaction among peers confirms this is a single-name event. Freshpet’s rise and Petco’s modest decline suggest the market is not interpreting the downgrades as a sector-wide warning on pet spending. The ProShares Pet Care ETF, which holds all three companies, reflects this mixed sentiment without a uniform sell-off.
Chewy shares had already fallen on Wednesday following the release of second-quarter results, where a free cash flow shortfall overshadowed a raised full-year outlook. The JPMorgan and Evercore ISI notes ratify the market’s initial reaction rather than introducing new fundamental concerns, leaving the stock trading below both firms’ price targets.
