Costco Upgraded on Strong Sales Despite Insider Selling

Costco shares face a mixed outlook as an analyst upgrade follows robust fiscal results, even as insiders sell stock and institutional positions fluctuate.
Costco Wholesale Corporation received a bullish reassessment from a major brokerage following the release of its August and fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 sales data. The firm upgraded its rating on the retailer from Hold to Buy, setting a price target of $1,030. This move highlights how the company’s recent performance provided clear visibility into retail trends, which investors are viewing as a stabilizing factor in a volatile market.
Despite the positive analyst note, the stock has closed lower for eight consecutive sessions. Market participants are monitoring this price action closely, noting the contrast between the fundamental strength indicated by sales figures and the recent technical weakness. The overall sentiment remains measured, with traders balancing the upgrade against the persistent downward trend in share price.
Insiders sold shares recently
Corporate insiders have been net sellers of Costco stock over the past six months. Kenneth D. Denman sold 885 shares for an estimated $847,345, while Executive Vice President Caton Frates sold 700 shares for approximately $695,100. There were no recorded purchases by company insiders during this period. This pattern of selling activity by those with direct knowledge of the business adds a layer of caution to the recent upgrade narrative.
Institutional positions show mixed signals
Institutional investor activity for Costco has been divergent in the most recent quarters. While 1,895 institutions added shares, 2,009 reduced their positions. Notably, Invesco Ltd. significantly increased its stake, adding nearly 9.7 million shares in the second quarter of 2026, a move valued at over $9 billion. Conversely, Diamond Asset Management removed almost its entire position, selling 6.7 million shares. This divergence suggests that while some large players are accumulating, others are exiting or rebalancing their portfolios.
The broader analyst consensus remains high, with a median price target of $1,125 across 11 firms in the last six months. Recent targets range from $1,000 at DA Davidson to $1,175 at TD Cowen. The upgrade to Buy at a $1,030 target places the firm in the lower-to-mid range of current estimates, indicating that while the sales results were positive, the upside potential is viewed conservatively by some observers compared to peers.
Congressional trades align with market
Members of Congress have engaged in modest trading of Costco shares recently. Representative Dan Newhouse and Senator Alan Armstrong each purchased up to $15,000 worth of stock in March and July 2026. Representative Richard McCormick sold up to $15,000 in July. These transactions are relatively small in scale compared to institutional moves but reflect individual interest in the retailer’s performance amid broader economic conditions.
