Jersey Mike's Q2: Traffic Accelerates, EBITDA Rises

Jersey Mike's reported 10% revenue growth and 7% adjusted EBITDA increase in its first post-IPO quarter, driven by digital adoption and store expansion.
Jersey Mike's Subs Inc. posted its first quarterly results since its initial public offering, revealing a 10% year-over-year increase in revenue to $208 million. The company’s systemwide sales reached $1.21 billion, while same-store sales climbed 2.3% primarily due to higher transaction volumes. This performance aligns closely with the $208.79 million consensus estimate from analysts, indicating that the sandwich chain is maintaining its growth trajectory despite broader industry headwinds.
Profitability metrics showed a mixed picture, with net income declining to $37 million from $59 million in the prior year. This drop was attributed to higher interest costs and other expenses, partially offset by a $14 million gain from the sale of company-owned stores. However, adjusted EBITDA rose 7% to $114 million. Excluding a $10 million adverse impact related to advertising fund timing, the company reported an 18% increase in adjusted EBITDA, demonstrating underlying operational strength.
Digital Adoption Drives Store Growth
Digital channels continue to reshape the company’s sales mix, now accounting for 43% of total sales, up from 41% in the previous year. Average unit volume increased to $1.38 million from $1.35 million, reflecting stronger customer engagement per location. CEO Charlie Morrison noted that transaction growth accelerated during the quarter, allowing the company to outperform weak restaurant industry traffic trends. The firm opened 83 new stores in the period, bringing its total location count to 3,378, an 8.1% year-over-year increase.
The company attributes its resilience to a combination of product innovation and digital expansion. Morrison stated that the strategy focuses on attracting more customers and deepening digital sales penetration. The shift toward digital orders is a key driver of the recent same-store sales acceleration, which improved from 3.6% a year earlier. This operational focus supports the company's ability to maintain growth even when macroeconomic conditions pressure discretionary dining out.
Financial Outlook Targets 20% EBITDA Growth
Looking ahead, Jersey Mike's projects full-year same-store sales growth between 2.5% and 3%. For the third quarter, the company forecasts a 3% to 4% increase in same-store sales. Management also expects net unit growth of at least 8% for the fiscal year, continuing the aggressive expansion pace seen in the second quarter. These figures suggest a sustained commitment to capturing market share through new locations and improved customer frequency.
The company anticipates adjusted EBITDA growth of at least 20% for the full year, signaling confidence in margin expansion. Cash flow remains robust, with operating cash flow totaling $105 million in the first two quarters. After $4 million in capital spending, free cash flow stood at approximately $101 million. The balance sheet holds $265 million in cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash, providing a solid liquidity buffer for future investments and debt management.
Market Reaction Reflects Steady Performance
Following the earnings release, the stock edged higher on Wednesday. TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles reiterated a Buy rating and maintained a $26 price target. The report, as covered by GN markets/earnings (en-US), highlights a company that is effectively managing cost pressures while expanding its digital footprint. The divergence between declining net income and rising adjusted EBITDA underscores the importance of operational metrics in evaluating the chain's current financial health.
