Kroger Profit Beats Expectations, Guidance Cut

Kroger posts higher Q2 net earnings and reaffirms fiscal 2026 profit targets, but lowers identical sales growth outlook to 0.2-0.8% amid macro headwinds.
Kroger Co. reported second-quarter net earnings attributable to the company of $641 million, or $1.05 per share, exceeding the prior year's $609 million. Adjusted earnings reached $667 million, or $1.09 per share, a 5% increase driven by cost savings, pharmacy performance, and improved eCommerce margins. Operating profit rose to $971 million from $863 million in the same period last year. The stock fell approximately 2.62% in pre-market trading to $55.47, reacting to the narrowed growth outlook despite the profit improvement.
Total sales for the quarter increased 2.0% to $34.621 billion. However, identical sales without fuel grew only 0.2%, a significant deceleration from the 3.4% growth recorded in the prior year. Adjusted eCommerce sales expanded by 20%, contributing to the overall revenue mix. CFO David Kennerley noted that the slower identical sales growth reflects a challenging macro environment, including a 140 basis point headwind associated with the Inflation Reduction Act.
FY26 Profit Outlook Reaffirmed
The company maintained its fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings per diluted share guidance of $5.10 to $5.30. Adjusted FIFO net operating profit guidance also remained unchanged at a range of $5.0 billion to $5.2 billion. Management indicated that the factors driving second-quarter profitability, such as cost management and pharmacy strength, provide visibility into the full-year results. This reaffirmation suggests that despite slower top-line growth, Kroger expects to sustain its margin structure and earnings power through the remainder of the fiscal year.
Identical Sales Forecast Reduced
Kroger cut its identical sales without fuel growth forecast for fiscal 2026. The new range is 0.2% to 0.8%, down from the previous expectation of 1.0% to 2.0%. This reduction acknowledges the impact of macroeconomic conditions and regulatory costs on consumer spending patterns. The company attributed the lower growth trajectory to the broader economic environment, which continues to pressure discretionary grocery spending even as core operational efficiencies support the bottom line.
Market Reaction to Guidance
Investors reacted negatively to the lowered sales growth expectations, causing shares to drop in pre-market activity. The decline occurred despite the company's strong quarterly profit delivery and maintained earnings targets. The market appears to be prioritizing the reduced top-line growth outlook over the stable profit guidance. This sentiment reflects concerns about the sustainability of volume growth in a high-interest-rate environment, where consumers may continue to trade down or reduce store visits.
According to GN markets/earnings (en-US) data, the divergence between profit strength and sales slowdown highlights Kroger's operational resilience. The company is leveraging cost controls and high-margin categories like pharmacy to protect earnings, even as comparable store sales growth slows. The strategic focus on eCommerce growth, which rose 20%, offers a potential offset to brick-and-mortar softness, though the overall identical sales metric remains the primary driver of investor sentiment in the immediate term.
