National Beverage Q1 Sales Slip Amid Tariffs

National Beverage Corp. reported first-quarter net sales of $331 million, with margins pressured by aluminum costs and tariffs.
National Beverage Corp. (NASDAQ: FIZZ) posted first-quarter net sales of $331 million for the period ended August 1, 2026. The company recorded earnings per share of $0.50 and reported a gross margin of 35%, a figure weighed down by elevated input costs. Despite the operational headwinds, the firm maintained strong liquidity, ending the quarter with $107 million in cash after distributing a $304 million special dividend on July 30, 2026.
Management attributed the sales performance to a combination of soft consumer sentiment and tariff-related pressures. Average selling price increases were insufficient to offset volume declines, resulting in a net negative impact on revenue. According to GN markets/earnings (en-US) reporting, the company noted that while market conditions remain challenging, recent order rebounds in August suggest a potential stabilization in demand.
Aluminum Costs Drive Margin Compression
The 35% gross margin reflects significant external cost pressures, primarily driven by aluminum commodity prices and tariff obligations. Aluminum costs alone reduced gross margin by nearly 600 basis points, while increased fuel and freight rates further eroded profitability in both inbound and outbound logistics. The company stated that the convergence of these factors limited its ability to respond with the speed historically seen in similar scenarios.
In response to these pressures, National Beverage elected to absorb a portion of the tariff-related cost increases. Management indicated that recent pricing actions, combined with a disciplined operating focus, are expected to improve future performance. The company continues to monitor volatile market conditions closely while implementing strategies to protect margin integrity.
Strategic Dividend and Product Innovation
The quarter’s $3.25 per share special dividend marks the thirteenth such distribution in the company’s history, contributing to a total payout of over $1.8 billion. This capital return underscores the firm’s consistent strategy of delivering strong cash flows through operational execution. The dividend was paid from cash reserves that remain robust at $107 million post-distribution.
Product innovation remains a central pillar of the growth strategy, with the recent launch of the LaCroix PineApple CocoNut flavor cited as a driver of incremental demand. This new offering, featured in summer marketing campaigns, is part of a broader effort to expand consumption occasions and maintain consumer engagement through targeted merchandising and marketing initiatives.
Forward Outlook and Operational Focus
Looking ahead, National Beverage expressed optimism that improving volume and mix will resume growth momentum. The company’s strategy remains focused on delivering innovative beverages and vibrant consumer engagement, supported by disciplined operational execution. Management believes that current pricing actions will mitigate the impact of external cost pressures, allowing the business to return to a trajectory of sustainable margin expansion.
