Gulf Coast Midstream Partners has initiated a non-binding open season for its proposed Nash Storage Hub, targeting 23 billion cubic feet of initial working gas capacity to link Permian supplies with Gulf Coast industrial and LNG demand.

Gulf Coast Midstream Partners LLC (GCMP) has launched a non-binding open season for firm natural gas storage and wheeling services at its proposed Nash Storage Hub in Fort Bend County, Texas. The facility, formerly known as the Freeport Energy Storage Hub, is designed as a high-cycle salt cavern infrastructure intended to bridge the supply gap between the Permian basin and Gulf Coast markets. The company aims to serve a diverse customer base, including LNG export terminals, power generators, utilities, and industrial consumers.

According to a release dated September 9, the project is strategically located near more than 15 interstate and intrastate pipeline systems. GCMP holds permits from the Railroad Commission of Texas for the development of up to five salt caverns at the Nash Dome site, with a total potential working gas capacity of approximately 57 billion cubic feet (bcf). The initial phase of development focuses on constructing two caverns with a combined working capacity of 23 bcf, supported by an injection capacity of 0.9 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) and a withdrawal capacity of 1.5 bcfd.

Infrastructure Design and Pipeline Connectivity

The first phase includes a large-diameter header system, a bidirectional booster station, and multiple pipeline interconnections to facilitate efficient gas movement. GCMP expects the hub to connect with major transmission systems, including Tennessee Gas Pipeline, Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America (NGPL), Transco, Matterhorn, Eiger, Traverse, Solitude, Enterprise, Tejas, Gulf South, and Florida Gas Transmission. This network integration is critical for enabling the bidirectional flow of natural gas required to balance regional supply and demand fluctuations.

Project Timeline and Investment Milestones

The project is currently undergoing front-end engineering, cavern design, and project planning. GCMP anticipates reaching a final investment decision by April 1, 2027. Following this milestone, the company targets an in-service date of April 1, 2030. The open season for these services runs through October 23, 2026, allowing potential customers to express interest in firm capacity before the investment decision is finalized.

Market Strategy and Regional Supply

By positioning the Nash Storage Hub as a key node in the Gulf Coast midstream network, GCMP seeks to enhance the reliability of gas supply for energy-intensive industries. The facility’s high-cycle capability is designed to address the volatility of natural gas prices and volumes, providing a critical storage buffer for LNG exporters and other large-volume consumers. This strategic infrastructure development underscores the growing importance of storage capacity in securing long-term fuel security for the region.
