Marathon Petroleum plans $1.5 billion in 2026 capital spending, focusing on high-yield projects at Garyville and Galveston Bay to boost jet fuel and diesel output.

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is allocating $1.5 billion to capital expenditures for 2026, excluding its MPLX segment. The company directs approximately 65% of this budget toward value-enhancing projects and 35% to sustaining operations. This strategy prioritizes refinery flexibility and product yield improvements at key sites including Galveston Bay, Robinson, El Paso, and Garyville. Management targets internal rates of return of at least 25% on these initiatives, aiming to enhance margins through better crude conversion and cost reduction.

Several investments have already entered service, contributing to near-term operational improvements. The Garyville jet flexibility project was completed in the first quarter, while upgrades at El Paso and Robinson became operational in the second quarter. The El Paso project upgrades fluid catalytic cracking and alkylation units, enabling the production of specialty gasoline for markets in El Paso, Phoenix, and Mexico. At Robinson, new infrastructure adds approximately 10,000 barrels per day of jet fuel capacity, allowing the company to respond to regional demand increases.

Upcoming Capacity Expansions Through 2027

Marathon Petroleum expects to complete a 90,000-barrel-per-day distillate hydrotreater at Galveston Bay by the end of 2027. This facility will increase the supply of high-value ultra-low sulfur diesel. Concurrently, feedstock optimization at Garyville is projected to raise crude throughput by 30,000 barrels per day. An additional project at the same site will add 10,000 barrels per day of export-premium gasoline capacity while reducing operational costs. These expansions are designed to strengthen the company's product mix and cost position across varying market conditions.

Sector Peers Pursue Similar Strategies

Valero Energy Corporation is also investing in refinery flexibility, planning approximately $2 billion in capital expenditures for 2026. Roughly $1.7 billion is designated for sustaining operations, with the remainder allocated to growth projects. A key initiative is the $230 million fluid catalytic cracking unit optimization at the St. Charles refinery. Expected to come online in the third quarter of 2026, this project aims to increase the production of high-value finished gasoline and enhance crude optionality across Valero's refining system.

Refinery Margins Drive Investment Logic

The focus on high-return projects reflects a broader industry trend toward optimizing refinery margins. According to GN auto stocks/energy-stocks analysis, refining margins remain a critical driver of capital allocation decisions. By shifting capacity toward higher-value products like jet fuel and specialty gasoline, companies like MPC and Valero aim to capture more value per barrel of crude processed. This approach mitigates exposure to volatile commodity prices and supports long-term earnings stability.
