Eastern Bank dominated Dhaka Stock Exchange trading activity with Tk36.94 crore in turnover, despite shares closing flat. The bank recently reported 25% profit growth driven by government securities yields.

Eastern Bank topped the Dhaka Stock Exchange turnover board on September 20, recording Tk36.94 crore in trading value. This volume represented 1.61 crore shares exchanged across 1,773 transactions, marking a significant spike in activity for the lender. Market insiders note that EBL shares rarely lead the daily turnover chart, making this session an outlier in recent trading patterns.

Despite the heavy transaction volume, the stock price remained stable. EBL shares closed at Tk22.90, unchanged from the previous session. The trading range was narrow, moving from a low of Tk22.70 to a high of Tk23.10 after opening at Tk23.00. At this valuation, the bank’s total market capitalization stands at Tk3,764 crore, with a free float value of Tk2,615 crore.

Profit Growth Driven By Securities Returns

The trading activity follows strong financial results reported by the bank. For the first half of 2026, Eastern Bank posted a 25% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit, reaching Tk439 crore. Consolidated earnings per share rose to Tk2.67, up from a restated Tk2.14 in the same period last year.

Management attributed the earnings boost to higher returns on government securities, benefiting from elevated treasury yields. The bank also cited steady growth in non-funded income and improved operational efficiency as key contributors to the bottom-line improvement. These factors combined to drive the profit surge despite the flat share price action on the exchange.

Sharp Industries And IPDC Follow

Sharp Industries secured the second position on the turnover chart with Tk25.84 crore in trades. IPDC Finance Limited ranked third, recording Tk23.07 crore in trading value. Other highly active stocks during the session included Paramount Textile, Bangladesh National Insurance, and Asiatic Laboratories.

The Business Standard reported that Eastern Bank’s lead was distinct among the top-traded list. While other stocks like Saiham Textile and Reliance Insurance also saw significant volume, none matched EBL’s Tk36.94 crore total. The concentration of trade in the banking and industrial sectors highlights the current market focus.

Market Capitalization Remains Stable

The unchanged closing price of Tk22.90 keeps Eastern Bank’s market capitalization at Tk3,764 crore. This stability suggests that the high turnover was driven by institutional repositioning or liquidity needs rather than a shift in valuation. The free float market capitalization of Tk2,615 crore reflects the portion of shares available for public trading.
