Silvercrest Secures Irish MiFID License for EU Expansion

Silvercrest Asset Management has obtained a full MiFID license from the Central Bank of Ireland, positioning its $25 billion discretionary platform to serve institutional clients across the European Union.
Silvercrest Asset Management Group Inc. (NASDAQ: SAMG) has secured a full Markets in Financial Instruments Directive license from the Central Bank of Ireland. This regulatory approval allows the New York-based firm to legally provide investment advice and portfolio management services to ultra-high-net-worth individuals and institutional investors throughout the European Economic Area. The move marks a significant step in the company’s international expansion strategy, moving beyond its primary North American footprint.
As of June 30, 2026, Silvercrest manages $25 billion in discretionary assets under management. The firm operates with a lean client-to-professional ratio of 5:1, catering to a limited number of high-value relationships. This structure supports a 98% client retention rate, a metric the company attributes to its integrated approach combining investment management with tax-aware planning and estate coordination. The new license directly enables the firm to apply this model to a broader European audience.
Dublin Office Leads European Push
The firm’s European headquarters is located in Dublin, where it recently expanded its leadership team to support this growth. Fintan Maher, a veteran family advisor with over 25 years of experience in Ireland and Australia, has been appointed Managing Director and Head of the European office. His appointment signals a commitment to serving local and cross-border family offices, leveraging his background as former CIO of Irelandia Investments and leader of Goodbody’s family advisory business.
Maher is joined by Colm Galvin, who serves as Director and Portfolio Manager. Galvin brings over two decades of financial market experience, having previously served as Founding Partner of MGK Capital Partners, a Dublin-based multi-family office. Together with Sarah-Jane Leonard, Director of Finance and Operations, and Carina Myles, Head of Compliance and Risk, the Dublin leadership team now numbers four. This staffing level is designed to handle the operational and compliance complexities of managing European assets under the new MiFID framework.
Regulatory Framework Enables Service
Obtaining a full MiFID license is a prerequisite for providing discretionary portfolio management and investment advice in the EU. Previously, Silvercrest’s ability to serve European clients was constrained by regulatory structures that did not permit full-service advisory roles. By securing this license from the Central Bank of Ireland, Silvercrest can now directly contract with European institutional allocators, including pension funds, endowments, and foundations, without relying on third-party intermediaries.
This regulatory status also simplifies the onboarding process for ultra-high-net-worth families residing in Ireland and other EU member states. The firm can now offer a unified suite of services, including financial planning, philanthropy coordination, and family governance, under a single regulatory umbrella. According to GN stocks/banks reporting, this consolidation of services is critical for maintaining the high-touch service model that defines Silvercrest’s competitive position in the wealth management sector.
Strategic Focus on Institutional Clients
Silvercrest’s asset management business is designed for large institutional allocators, offering specialist investment solutions that differ from generic mutual fund offerings. The firm’s independent, employee-owned structure allows for a long-term investment horizon, which is a key selling point for pension funds and endowments seeking stability. The new Irish license facilitates direct access to these capital pools, reducing friction in the asset allocation process.
With $21.7 billion in assets under management, Silvercrest is positioned to compete for larger mandates within Europe. The firm’s strategy relies on maintaining a small number of high-value relationships rather than pursuing volume-based growth. The MiFID license is the foundational regulatory piece that allows this strategy to be executed across the continent, providing the legal basis for the firm’s next phase of international expansion.
