Bio-Techne Posts Steady Q4 Revenue with Margin Expansion

Bio-Techne Corp reported fourth-quarter results where net sales rose 3% organically, while adjusted EPS matched consensus estimates. The company achieved a 310 basis point increase in gross margin despite flat full-year revenue.
Bio-Techne Corp reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 52 cents, a 1.9% year-over-year decline that aligned with analyst expectations. The company posted GAAP EPS of 35 cents, reversing a prior-year loss of 11 cents. Net sales for the quarter reached $321.2 million, representing a 3% organic increase and exceeding consensus estimates by 1.26%. According to data from GN markets/earnings (en-US), the stock has remained relatively stable, down only 0.1% since the release, outperforming the broader S&P 500 index over the same period.
Full-year adjusted EPS for fiscal 2026 totaled $1.93, a 0.5% increase over the previous year and 1% above the consensus mark. Total revenues for the fiscal year stood at $1.22 billion, remaining flat on both reported and organic bases. Foreign currency effects provided a 2% favorable impact, which was offset by a 2% negative impact from a business held for sale. The final revenue figure came in 0.8% higher than the consensus estimate.
Protein Sciences drives organic growth
The Protein Sciences segment generated $231.2 million in revenue, up 2% year over year from $226.5 million. Organic growth in this division was 1%, with foreign currency contributing an additional 1% favorable impact. In the Diagnostics and Spatial Biology segment, revenues were essentially flat at $90.1 million compared to $89.7 million in the prior-year quarter. Organic revenues in this segment increased by 8%, but this gain was completely neutralized by an 8% negative impact from the held-for-sale business.
Cost discipline improves gross margins
Gross profit increased by 6.3% year over year to $211.4 million. The gross margin expanded by 310 basis points to 65.8%, driven by a 7.1% decline in cost of sales to $109.8 million. However, the adjusted gross margin, which excludes certain non-operating items, contracted by 80 basis points to 69.2%. Selling, general, and administrative expenses dropped significantly by 42.4% to $113.2 million. Research and development expenses fell 8.0% to $23.9 million, contributing to a 38.4% reduction in total operating expenses to $137.1 million.
Investors weigh stable performance
The market reaction has been muted, with shares declining just 0.1% in the month following the earnings release. This slight decrease outperformed the S&P 500, suggesting investors view the company's execution as consistent with expectations. The absence of significant revenue acceleration, despite margin improvements, appears to have kept the stock in a narrow trading range. The flat full-year revenue growth indicates that the company is maintaining its market share rather than expanding aggressively, a factor that investors are likely monitoring ahead of the next reporting period.
