Illumina Lifts 2026 Outlook After Q2 Margin Expansion

Illumina raised its fiscal 2026 revenue and EPS guidance following a second quarter where non-GAAP operating margins expanded year over year, prompting a UBS upgrade to Buy.
Illumina Inc. (ISIN US4523271090) strengthened its market position on September 10, 2026, closing at USD 201.27 on the Nasdaq. This price action placed the genome sequencing specialist slightly above the current analyst consensus target of USD 199.12, reflecting renewed institutional interest in the company’s financial trajectory.
The primary catalyst for this shift was UBS upgrading its rating on Illumina from Neutral to Buy on September 9, 2026. While the broader analyst consensus remains mixed with an average Hold rating, the UBS move signals a more constructive view on the company’s earnings stability and competitive standing in the sequencing market.
Q2 2026 Results Show Margin Gains
In the second quarter of 2026, Illumina generated revenue of USD 1.16 billion, a 9.5 percent increase from USD 1.06 billion in the same period last year. Profitability metrics improved as well, with GAAP operating margin reaching 21.1 percent and non-GAAP operating margin rising to 22.5 percent compared to the prior-year quarter.
Earnings performance showed divergence between accounting standards. GAAP diluted EPS decreased slightly to USD 1.35 from USD 1.49 in Q2 2025, while non-GAAP diluted EPS increased to USD 1.31 from USD 1.19. This indicates that adjusted earnings improved year over year despite higher GAAP charges affecting the bottom line.
Cash Flow Remains a Key Metric
Cash generation showed some volatility in the second quarter. Free cash flow for Q2 2026 stood at USD 162 million, down from USD 204 million in the previous year’s second quarter. However, the company maintained a strong liquidity position, ending the quarter with USD 1.17 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments.
Raised Guidance Signals Confidence
Following the Q2 release, Illumina revised its fiscal 2026 outlook upward. The company now expects total revenue between USD 4.60 billion and USD 4.64 billion, an increase from the previous range of USD 4.52 billion to USD 4.62 billion. This revision reflects stronger-than-expected demand, particularly in organic revenue growth outside the United States.
The updated guidance also includes a non-GAAP operating margin target of 23.4 percent to 23.6 percent and non-GAAP diluted EPS of USD 5.30 to USD 5.40. The midpoint of this EPS range aligns closely with the current analyst consensus estimate of approximately USD 5.36, suggesting that the market’s expectations are now well-calibrated to the company’s revised trajectory.
