ANDRITZ has booked a mid-three-digit million euro contract to renew the electromechanical systems at Slovakia's largest hydropower station.

ANDRITZ and Slovak engineering firm VUJE have won a contract to modernize the 720MW Gabčíkovo hydropower plant on the Danube. The project, awarded by VODOHOSPODÁRSKA VÝSTAVBA, focuses on renewing the facility's electromechanical equipment to meet current technical standards.

The order is valued in the mid-three-digit million-euro range and was recorded in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. The scope covers the refurbishment of all eight Kaplan turbine-generator units, aiming to boost efficiency and availability while extending the service life of the main operating equipment by at least 30 years.

Electromechanical Renewal Scope

The work includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of key turbine and generator components. ANDRITZ will also upgrade automation, excitation, protection, and control systems. Additionally, transformers and auxiliary electrical systems are slated for full renewal as part of the modernization package.

To minimize disruption to power generation, the refurbishment will be carried out sequentially. This approach allows the remaining units to continue operating while specific sections undergo maintenance and upgrade. The strategy ensures continuous output from the plant during the multi-year project.

Strategic Importance in Slovakia

Gabčíkovo is Slovakia's largest hydropower facility and accounts for approximately 10% of the country's total electricity production. The modernization addresses the need for reliable, long-term energy infrastructure in a key grid node. By extending equipment life, the project supports stability in the national power supply.

This contract fits within the broader trend of utilities investing in existing assets to maximize operational lifespan. As reported by GN auto stocks/utilities: power plant, such moves prioritize cost-effective efficiency gains over new capacity. The project underscores the ongoing reliance on hydroelectric assets for baseline power generation in the region.

Operational Continuity Strategy

The sequential execution plan is designed to maintain grid reliability throughout the overhaul. By isolating specific units for work, the plant avoids total shutdowns that would impact regional energy balances. This method aligns with industry standards for maintaining critical infrastructure while implementing significant technical upgrades.

The completion of this project will result in a fully updated electromechanical system at Gabčíkovo. The upgraded components are expected to operate at higher efficiency levels compared to the previous generation of equipment. This enhances the economic viability of the plant for the next three decades.
