Drone Sector Slides as Risk-Off Flows Hit High-Beta Names

AeroVironment, Red Cat, and Ondas fell without new company news, signaling a rotation out of speculative defense stocks.
Drone stocks declined on Wednesday despite the absence of company-specific news, as risk-off sentiment targeted high-beta names. AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV) led the drop, falling 4% to $142.40, while Red Cat (NASDAQ: RCAT) slipped 3% to $8.41 and Ondas (NASDAQ: ONDS) eased 2% to $7.50. The moves extended AeroVironment's year-to-date loss to 41%, a drawdown occurring on days with no fresh operational updates.
The sector's weakness contrasted sharply with broader market performance, where the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA: SPY) dropped just 0.4%. This disparity indicates a rotation out of speculative defense sectors rather than broad market weakness. As reported by GN stocks/nasdaq, the Defiance Drone and Modern Warfare ETF (NYSEARCA: JEDI) fell 2%, tracking the basket lower and giving back recent gains.
Recent Financial Metrics Remain Strong
The price action contradicts recent fundamental reports. AeroVironment’s fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results, released June 29, showed revenue of $641.6 million and adjusted earnings per share of $1.84. The company also reported record trailing bookings of $2.7 billion and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.4x. Today’s decline runs contrary to these positive indicators, suggesting market flows are prioritizing beta over current performance.
Red Cat and Ondas also lack new catalysts for their declines. Red Cat reaffirmed its full-year revenue target of $150 million to $180 million on its August 6 call, noting that 2026 is a second-half story. Ondas expects to exit 2026 with a $1 billion annualized run rate, with fiscal 2026 revenue guided between $525 million and $550 million. Its relative strength today may reflect this heavier operating scale compared to peers.
Execution Risks Define Current Valuation
Investor sentiment remains divided on AeroVironment, which carries a market capitalization of $7.24 billion. Bulls point to the Switchblade franchise and counter-UAS lineup, while bears note the stock's failure to hold gains after contract awards. Red Cat, with $325.6 million in cash, faces execution risk in the second half of 2026, a period the market is currently handicapping in real time.
The uneven drawdown across the drone basket highlights the sector's volatility. Ondas shares are down 23% year to date, while Red Cat is up 6% for the year. The JEDI ETF is down 11% over the past month. Today’s session tightened the correlation among these names, suggesting a group trade driven by flow dynamics rather than single-name fundamentals.
Market Rotation Continues to Pressure Defense
Watch for whether the JEDI ETF holds its intraday levels into the close and if the drop spreads to larger defense primes. A continued rotation away from high-beta stocks could deepen the downturn in the drone sector. Position sizing and liquidity remain critical factors as thin daily trading volumes amplify moves in these smaller names.
