Karamtara Engineering IPO Sees Strong Retail Demand Amid Debt Focus

Karamtara Engineering's ₹875 crore IPO reached 3.61 times subscription by Day 2, with a 27% grey market premium signaling strong investor interest ahead of the final bidding day.
Karamtara Engineering Ltd. entered the final day of its ₹875 crore initial public offering on Friday, September 11, having already secured substantial investor interest. By the close of bidding on Thursday, the issue was subscribed 3.61 times, with investors placing bids for 9.16 crore shares against the 2.54 crore shares offered. This strong uptake indicates robust demand for the steel rolling mill manufacturer, which is listed on the stock exchange following a highly anticipated debut.
The company’s shares are trading at a grey market premium (GMP) of ₹69 in the unlisted market, representing a 27% gain over the upper price band of ₹254 per share. While GMP figures remain speculative and do not guarantee listing-day performance, the premium suggests positive sentiment. According to reports cited by GN stocks/ipo, this valuation reflects confidence in the company’s operational trajectory and debt reduction plans.
Retail Investors Drive Subscription Momentum
Non-institutional investors (NIIs) led the subscription surge, with their portion subscribed 6.16 times. Within this category, investors bidding in the ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh range showed the strongest interest, subscribing their allotted segment 7.18 times. These investors bid for 1.3 crore shares, significantly exceeding the 18.15 lakh shares reserved for them. Corporate and other individual investors also contributed substantially, bidding 5.64 times their allotted shares.
Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) subscribed to the issue 2.27 times, placing bids for 1.65 crore shares compared to the 72.61 lakh shares allotted. Meanwhile, retail individual investors, who bid up to ₹2 lakh, subscribed their portion 3.28 times, bidding for 4.16 crore shares against 1.27 crore shares offered. The broad-based participation across investor categories underscores the wide appeal of the IPO.
Proceeds Target Debt Reduction Strategy
Karamtara Engineering plans to allocate approximately 90% of the ₹675 crore fresh issue proceeds to repay existing debt. The company reported debt levels of around ₹1,030 crore at the start of the current fiscal year. By leveraging IPO proceeds for deleveraging, the firm aims to strengthen its balance sheet and improve financial flexibility, a key consideration for long-term investors evaluating the stock’s future performance.
Key Dates For Allotment And Listing
The IPO timeline remains unchanged, with allotment expected to be finalized by September 15. Refunds to unsuccessful bidders and credit of shares to demat accounts are anticipated on September 16. The stock is scheduled to list on exchanges on September 17, following the completion of the subscription process and regulatory clearances.
