Greenland Mines filed for a 262 km² license extension to double its Sarfartoq footprint, supporting a $2.05 billion NPV estimate for ST1.

Key points

  • Greenland Mines applied for a 262 km² license extension, increasing its Sarfartoq control area from 192 to 454 km².
  • The ST1 deposit holds 12.2 million tons of resources grading 1.32% TREO, supporting a $2.05 billion high-case NPV.
  • Planned ST1 production would represent 34% of neodymium-praseodymium oxide refined outside China at 2025 levels.
GRML

Greenland Mines Ltd (Nasdaq: GRML) has applied to the Government of Greenland for a new mining license covering 262 square kilometers immediately east of its existing Sarfartoq concession. According to Yahoo Finance, this move expands the company's total control position at the site from 192 to approximately 454 square kilometers, effectively doubling its footprint in the West Greenland rare earth district.

The expansion is underpinned by a new independent Mineral Resource Estimate for the ST1 deposit, which reports 6.9 million tons of Indicated resources grading 1.60% total rare earth oxides. The company also released an Initial Assessment projecting a high-case pre-tax net present value of $2.05 billion for the ST1 project, which would produce neodymium and praseodymium oxide for permanent magnet manufacturing.

ST1 Economics and Resource Estimates

The new S-K 1300 compliant Mineral Resource Estimate for the ST1 deposit includes 5.3 million tons of Inferred resources grading 0.96% TREO. Combining Indicated and Inferred categories, the hybrid scenario totals approximately 12.2 million tons with an average grade of 1.32% TREO. These figures represent the current defined mineral resource base, distinct from proven reserves, and form the basis for the $2.05 billion high-case NPV calculation.

The economic model suggests that planned annual production of neodymium-praseodymium oxide from ST1 would account for roughly 34% of the volume currently refined outside of China at 2025 consumption levels. This projection highlights the project's potential significance in the global supply chain for critical minerals used in high-performance permanent magnets, although the company notes that mineral resources do not yet demonstrate full economic viability as reserves.

District-Scale Development Strategy

Greenland Mines is pursuing a two-track approach that focuses on advancing ST1 through technical and environmental development stages while simultaneously evaluating other known occurrences in the Sarfartoq Carbonatite Complex. The broader district contains several less-developed sites, including ST40, ST19, ST24, ST31, and ST43, which are not included in the current ST1 resource estimate or economic analysis.

By securing the additional 262 square kilometers, the company aims to systematically test the wider area for new discoveries while maintaining focus on the primary ST1 asset. This strategy allows the firm to unlock value from satellite targets and generate new exploration leads without diverting resources from the core development plan for the neodymium and praseodymium-rich deposit.

Strategic Context in West Greenland

The license application follows a series of technical milestones at Sarfartoq and comes days after a U.S.-Denmark-Greenland Security Agreement was announced. This geopolitical shift underscores the growing strategic importance of Greenland's critical minerals sector, particularly for Western-aligned developers seeking to diversify supply chains away from dominant non-Western producers.

Greenland Mines positions itself as a key player in this emerging market, leveraging its expanded land position to build a district-scale rare earth asset. The company's leadership emphasizes that the opportunity extends beyond the initial ST1 deposit, aiming to establish a comprehensive development platform in one of the world's most significant rare earth regions.
