Idaho’s historic mining districts attract new capital as developers restart antimony and gold operations.

Key points

  • Liberty Gold targets 177,000 ounces of annual gold production at its Black Pine project in Idaho.
  • Perpetua Resources begins construction at Stibnite, hosting a 4.8 million ounce gold reserve and major antimony resources.
  • Elk Range Mining starts maiden drilling at its Friday project, targeting high-grade gold in the Orogrande Shear Zone.

Idaho’s mining sector is entering a new phase of expansion as a wave of explorers targets the state’s legacy deposits for gold and critical minerals. This renewed activity is driven by US strategic priorities for supply chain security and a supportive regulatory environment. Companies are focusing on historical districts that previously supplied key materials for the US military, aiming to restart dormant assets and develop new reserves.

According to stockhead.com.au, the revival involves both established developers and new entrants. The state’s infrastructure and geological database provide a foundation for rapid project advancement. This shift marks a transition from historical depletion to modern re-exploration, with significant capital flowing into projects that host substantial gold and antimony resources.

Key players target historic districts

Liberty Gold is advancing its Black Pine project with a target of 177,000 ounces of annual gold production over the mine life. Sunshine Silver Mining & Refining is preparing to restart its silver-antimony mine following a US$270 million IPO. Perpetua Resources has begun construction at its Stibnite project, which contains a 4.8 million ounce gold reserve and one of the largest antimony resources in the United States.

Resolution Minerals is pushing its Horse Heaven project toward antimony production while expanding its gold and tungsten potential. These developments reflect a broader industry trend of leveraging historical data to reduce exploration risk. The focus on antimony is particularly significant given its critical role in battery technology and national defense applications.

Elk Range initiates maiden drilling

Elk Range Mining (ASX:ELK) has commenced maiden drilling at its Friday gold project after listing on the ASX last month. The company is targeting high-grade mineralization within the Orogrande Shear Zone, a fully permitted historical mine site. Early core results from the initial hole show visible gold, supporting previous geological estimates that included an interval of 110.3 meters at 5.34 grams per tonne of gold.

The tenure encompasses the Friday, Buffalo Gulch, and Deadwood projects. Elk Range is utilizing an extensive historical geological and drilling database to guide its exploration strategy. This approach allows the company to build on prior work conducted shortly after the 1860 gold rush in the region, potentially accelerating the path to resource definition.

Strategic minerals drive investment

The resurgence in Idaho mining is closely tied to the demand for critical minerals. The Stibnite district, which supplied up to 90% of US antimony needs during World War II, is again a focus for development. Modern projects are designed to meet current industrial demands while ensuring domestic supply of essential elements like antimony and tungsten.

Idaho’s mining history spans over 160 years, with the Coeur d’Alene district producing more than 1.2 billion ounces of silver since 1884. The state’s diverse mineral endowment, including gold, silver, cobalt, and antimony, continues to attract investment. The current cycle of development is characterized by a mix of mine restarts and new exploration, all benefiting from the state’s established mining infrastructure and legal framework.
