Kendrick Resources (LSE:KEN) has released mineralogical data for its Teufelskuppe project, identifying fluorocarbonate hosts and low thorium levels that may streamline future processing.

Kendrick Resources has provided mineralogical and metallurgical insights from the Teufelskuppe carbonatite complex in Namibia. The analysis confirms that rare earth elements are primarily hosted in fluorocarbonate minerals, specifically bastnäsite and parisite. The company noted that over 95% of the identified rare earth content is contained within mineral phases that are compatible with established industrial processing methods.

Certified assay results indicate that thorium and uranium concentrations at the site are relatively low. Kendrick stated that these levels place the project within the lowest quartile of hard-rock rare earth projects globally. This finding is significant for the operational profile of the mine, as it suggests a reduced burden regarding radioactive waste management compared to many other similar assets.

Low Radioactivity Impacts Processing Costs

The lower concentrations of radioactive elements are expected to influence the design of the processing flowsheet. Kendrick anticipates that this could lead to potential reductions in capital expenditure and operating costs. Additionally, the company expects these levels to simplify environmental management and permitting processes. These remain company expectations rather than finalized project outcomes, but they point toward a potentially more efficient operational structure.

Ongoing Exploration Defines Resource Depth

Technical and exploration work continues at Teufelskuppe to define the depth and extent of the carbonatite mineralisation. The company is conducting diamond and reverse circulation drilling to gather further data on the deposit. This phase of development is critical for understanding the full scale of the light rare earth elements, including neodymium and praseodymium, present in the ground.

JORC Standard Upgrade Planned

Kendrick plans to upgrade the project’s mineral resource estimate to comply with JORC (2012) standards. This step is part of the broader strategy to advance the project towards production. The company’s portfolio also includes the Bonya Rare Earth Project in Namibia and the Blue Fox licence in northwest Zambia. Progressing these assets through exploration and technical studies remains the core business objective.

The findings from the Teufelskuppe project align with the company's focus on acquiring and advancing mineral resource projects. By identifying amenable mineralogy and low radioactivity, Kendrick aims to create a foundation for future development. The next steps will involve further drilling and resource estimation to solidify the economic case for the site.
