Rainbow Rare Earths Projects Deliver High Margins Without Mining Costs

Rainbow Rare Earths leverages phosphogypsum waste to achieve 70-75% EBITDA margins, bypassing the high capital intensity of conventional hard-rock mining.
Rainbow Rare Earths is positioning its two phosphogypsum-based projects as a low-capital alternative to traditional rare earth extraction. By recovering minerals from fertilizer waste rather than hard rock, the company reports EBITDA margins between 70% and 75% across its portfolio. This structural advantage allows for post-tax internal rates of return ranging from 40% to 45%, significantly outperforming the 20% benchmark often cited in the sector.
The company’s current market capitalization stands at approximately $250 million. This valuation is notably low when compared to the projected financial output of its assets. Management argues that the market has not fully priced in the economic efficiency of the phosphogypsum feedstock model, which eliminates the need for expensive mining, crushing, and milling stages typical of conventional operations.
Phosphogypsum Feedstock Reduces Capital Intensity
The operational model relies on reclaiming rare earths from above-ground waste stacks generated by phosphate rock processing. Instead of breaking new ground, Rainbow uses front-end loaders to extract material, followed by slurry screening and acid leaching. This process feeds directly into a standard solvent extraction circuit, a technology widely used in the industry for separating critical minerals.
This approach bypasses the most capital-intensive phases of project development. Conventional hard-rock projects require significant investment in mining infrastructure before chemical processing can begin. Rainbow’s method utilizes existing waste infrastructure, resulting in a lower overall capital cost and a faster path to production. The technical team leverages experience from over 80 previous chemical and metallurgical plants to optimize this specific extraction workflow.
Phalaborwa Project Shows Strong Economic Returns
The Phalaborwa project in South Africa is the most advanced asset, currently 75% through definitive feasibility study engineering. Recent economic studies indicate annual revenue of $250 million and EBITDA of $180 million based on December 2024 spot pricing. At current market prices, the project is expected to generate between $210 million and $220 million in annual EBITDA, with a post-tax IRR of 38%.
Capital expenditure for Phalaborwa is estimated at $325 million to $350 million. Rainbow holds an 85% stake in the project with an option to acquire the remaining 15%. The United States Development Finance Corporation has committed $50 million in equity to the venture via TechMet, providing significant de-risking for the development phase. First production is targeted for the first half of 2029.
Uberaba Joint Venture Secures Strategic Partnerships
The Uberaba project in Brazil is developed in a joint venture with The Mosaic Company, which holds a 51% stake. A March 2026 economic assessment highlighted a post-tax NPV10 of $916 million and a 45% post-tax IRR. The analysis projects an average EBITDA of $217 million per year over a 30-year life-of-mine, with a payback period of just 1.7 years.
The pre-feasibility study for Uberaba formally commenced in September 2026. Binding offtake term sheets are expected before the end of 2026, securing demand for the output. First production at this site is targeted for late 2030. The combined attributable EBITDA for both projects is projected to reach $300 million by 2030, a figure that exceeds Rainbow’s current market capitalization.
