Silex World Ltd, a University of Leeds spinout based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, has announced the continued development of its closed-loop rare earth recovery platform. The company focuses on extracting neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium from end-of-life permanent magnets and manufacturing scrap. By recovering these critical materials, Silex World aims to return them to the industrial supply chain for use in electric motors, wind turbines, and advanced robotics, reducing reliance on primary mining.

The initiative addresses the growing demand for rare earth elements driven by the expansion of electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors. As permanent magnets circulate through the economy, they represent a significant secondary resource. Silex World’s strategy bridges the gap between waste collection and industrial reuse by implementing low-energy processing and modular refining techniques. This approach is designed to maintain material specifications suitable for high-performance manufacturing applications.

Technology focuses on low-energy modular processing

The company’s technology platform combines continuous low-energy processing with modular infrastructure located close to feedstock sources. This setup allows for the identification, separation, and upgrading of recovered rare earth elements. Silex World emphasizes digital traceability throughout the material lifecycle, ensuring that processed materials meet the stringent quality requirements of industrial manufacturers. The modular design facilitates deployment near manufacturing hubs, minimizing transport costs and supply chain vulnerabilities.

Founder Michael Hodges stated that the goal is to create an industrial loop where magnets are recovered and returned to manufacturing rather than becoming low-value waste. He noted that a permanent magnet should not mark the end of a rare earth’s useful life. By establishing this circular system, Silex World seeks to transform the linear supply chain into a sustainable strategic materials network.

Midstream processing creates strategic material resilience

Silex World identifies midstream processing as the critical missing link in the rare earth value chain. Recycling alone does not create a circular economy without the infrastructure to transform recovered materials into usable products. The company’s development work targets this specific stage to support resilient supply chains outside current dominant processing centers. By focusing on this midstream capability, Silex World aims to secure a domestic source of strategic materials for key industrial sectors.

The increasing integration of rare earth permanent magnets in electric vehicles, aerospace, and defense systems has amplified the strategic importance of these materials.
