Steel Dynamics forecasts a significant jump in third-quarter diluted earnings per share, driven by record steel shipments and favorable metal margins, while recycling segment results face pressure from tighter spreads.

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) projects third-quarter 2026 diluted earnings per share between $5.34 and $5.38, marking a substantial increase from the $3.69 reported in the second quarter and the $2.74 recorded in the prior year’s third quarter. According to data released via GN markets/earnings (en-US), this sequential improvement is primarily attributed to the core steel operations, where profitability is expected to rise significantly due to expanded metal margins and record-high shipment volumes.

The company cites a combination of rising average realized steel selling values and lower scrap input costs as the key drivers for the margin expansion. Customer order activity remains robust, underpinned by solid demand in non-residential construction, energy, automotive, and industrial sectors. Persistently low customer inventories continue to support favorable pricing conditions, allowing the firm to capture higher value per ton despite the competitive landscape.

Recycling and Fabrication Segment Divergence

In contrast to the steel division, the metals recycling operations are expected to deliver lower earnings in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter. This decline is driven by compressed metal spreads and modestly lower shipment volumes. However, the steel fabrication business is positioned for modest sequential improvement, supported by stronger shipments that offset the negative impact of metal spread compression.

The fabrication segment’s performance reflects a balance between higher realized pricing and increased steel input material costs. Customer order activity has built momentum since late 2025, with the current backlog nearly 50 percent higher than levels seen in the prior year’s third quarter. This order book extends through the first quarter of 2027, with demand remaining healthy across commercial construction, data center development, manufacturing, and healthcare markets.

Aluminum Commissioning Progress and Capital Returns

Steel Dynamics expects aluminum operations to contribute meaningfully to third-quarter earnings growth, driven by increased shipments. The company reports significant progress in the commissioning of its aluminum flat rolled products mill in Columbus, Mississippi. All three cold mills are now operational, and the first of two Continuous Annealing and Solution Heat lines is active, with commercial material shipments anticipated in the fourth quarter.

The second CASH line is scheduled to begin producing material for customer qualification before the end of the year, further solidifying the firm’s position in the beverage can, automotive, and industrial sectors. In terms of capital allocation, Steel Dynamics has repurchased $261 million of its common stock during the third quarter, representing just under one percent of total shares outstanding. The full earnings report is scheduled for release after market close on October 19, 2026.
