US Rare Earth Production Rebounds Amid Supply Chain Shifts

United States rare earth production is experiencing a measurable increase, marking a reversal in a decades-long decline. This shift is driven by the urgent need to reduce dependence on China, which controls approximately 90% of global refining capacity and 70% of mining output. The resurgence is not merely a market correction but a strategic response to supply chain vulnerabilities affecting electronics, electric vehicles, and defense manufacturing.
Historically, the US led global production following the discovery of the Mountain Pass deposit in the late 1940s. However, by the 1980s, China’s state-backed investments in the Bayan Obo deposit and processing infrastructure undercut American competitors. The US subsequently adopted a laissez-faire approach, assuming free trade would ensure supply, which led to the closure of Mountain Pass two decades ago. This strategic gap has now become a critical national security issue.
China’s Export Restrictions Spurred US Investment
The turning point for US industrial strategy occurred in 2010 when Beijing imposed export quotas on rare earths. This move, intended to force manufacturing relocation to China, backfired by accelerating US and allied efforts to diversify supply sources. American firms and the Department of Defense have since prioritized domestic mining and processing capabilities to mitigate the risk of supply disruptions.
Strategic Importance for High-Tech and Defense
Rare earth elements are essential for the magnetic, heat-resistant, and phosphorescent properties required in modern technology. From smartphone components to aerospace systems, these 17 elements are indispensable. The current production uptick in the US is directly tied to the demand from these sectors, which cannot rely solely on a single foreign supplier for critical materials.
