Yttrium Shortages Test Global Supply Chains

China’s export controls on yttrium have triggered acute shortages in the US and Japan, forcing a rapid search for alternative sources.
Yttrium has emerged as a critical flashpoint in US-China trade relations, with supply disruptions directly impacting aerospace and semiconductor sectors. Beijing has maintained strict export controls, requiring proof of civilian use for all shipments, a measure that has halted consistent flows to Washington and Tokyo.
Despite a brief resumption of deliveries in October 2025 following diplomatic talks, the flow of material ceased again by February 2026. This intermittent supply strategy has created acute shortages in the United States, while Japan has received minimal shipments since November 2025, exacerbating reliance on Chinese sources for this essential industrial metal.
Supply Restrictions Drive Strategic Demand
The primary industrial application for yttrium is as a thermal barrier coating on jet engine turbines, a use case with no viable substitute in current aviation technology. Additional demand comes from laser manufacturing, screen displays, and semiconductor production. The dual-use nature of these applications has allowed Beijing to leverage supply restrictions as a geopolitical tool, effectively controlling access to high-tech manufacturing inputs.
China dominates the global supply chain, producing the metal largely as a byproduct of heavy mineral sands and rare earth mining. While resources exist in the US, Australia, and Brazil, processing capacity remains heavily concentrated in China. This structural imbalance means that even minor policy shifts in Beijing translate into immediate operational risks for manufacturers in allied nations.
Orbit Resources Targets Yttrium Output
Orbit Resources (ASX:OBT) is positioning its Narraburra project in New South Wales to address this supply gap. The deposit, located in the Lachlan Fold Belt, has demonstrated 90% extraction rates for rare earths and contains high concentrations of yttrium. In April 2023, the company reported a mineral resource estimate of 94.9 million tonnes at 739 parts per million total rare earth oxide, including a high-grade core of 20 million tonnes at 1,079 ppm.
To capitalize on rising demand, Orbit plans to spin out Narraburra into a dedicated ASX-listed entity named Matrix Critical Minerals. The company targets a listing in the second half of 2026. The project holds an official critical minerals designation from the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, reinforcing its strategic importance in diversifying global supply chains away from Chinese dependence.
Geopolitical Leverage Shapes Market Dynamics
The volatility in yttrium markets illustrates how critical minerals have become central to national security strategies. As the US and Japan seek to reduce exposure to Chinese supply risks, investors are increasingly focused on projects that can deliver scalable, non-Chinese output. The upcoming summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump is expected to further scrutinize these trade restrictions, with rare earths and magnets remaining key agenda items.
For companies like Orbit, the current supply environment creates a favorable backdrop for capital raising and project development. The demonstrated shortage in the US and Japan validates the commercial case for alternative sources, while the technical specifications of the Narraburra deposit position it as a credible contributor to future global supply.
