Fed Hike Outlook Lifts Nasdaq Futures Amid Tech Sector Moves

Nasdaq futures climbed 0.4% as markets priced in a 92.5% probability of a Fed rate hike, while Intel and SK Hynix shares surged on U.S. manufacturing talks.
U.S. stock futures edged higher early Wednesday as investors shifted focus to the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. Nasdaq futures rose 0.4%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.1%, according to data from GN auto stocks/technology: tech stocks. The move follows a weak Wall Street session, with markets now pricing in a 92.5% probability of a rate hike, the first since July 2023, to address sticky inflation and energy shocks.
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its policy decision at 2 p.m. ET, followed by a press conference at 2:30 p.m. Chair Kevin Warsh will address the rate path beyond September. The decision comes amid a macro environment where crude oil exceeds $100 per barrel and the 10-year Treasury yield remains above 5%. Investment advisor Gary Black noted that a measured 25-basis-point increase could be healthier for markets than a prolonged tightening cycle driven by surging oil prices.
Memory Chip Makers Eye U.S. Production
Intel and SK Hynix shares rose over 3% in premarket trade after reports indicated the South Korean memory-chip maker is in talks with Intel. The discussions center on SK Hynix potentially manufacturing memory chips in the United States for the first time. This development places both companies on the radar of retail investors seeking supply chain diversification opportunities.
SK Hynix also resolved an internal union dispute by agreeing to pay half of profit-sharing bonuses in cash. Separately, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the industry does not require a coordinated AI pause, suggesting individual labs should slow down only when safety demands it. These corporate updates provide specific operational and strategic context for technology sector performance ahead of the Fed's announcement.
Space and Fintech Stocks Draw Attention
Space-related equities including Rocket Lab, AST SpaceMobile, and SpaceX are gaining focus. The Pentagon confirmed the U.S. operates on-orbit space control weapons under its Golden Dome defense initiative. SpaceX stated that Starship Flight 14 targets September 22, pending regulatory approval, with the mission aiming to reach orbit for the first time. Cathie Wood commented that successful Starship development could materially alter investor valuation perspectives for the company.
In the fintech sector, Robinhood is under scrutiny after U.S. prosecutors charged two former employees in an alleged scheme involving confidential information and crypto-linked perpetual futures trading. Meanwhile, Oracle and Qualcomm are trending as retail traders look for catalysts around OpenAI funding and cloud opportunities in Japan. StoneX reiterated a Buy rating on Qualcomm, noting Amazon hinted at purchasing up to $60 billion in AI data-center chips.
Retail Sentiment Shifts Slightly
Retail sentiment for major index ETFs has shown marginal improvement. On Stocktwits, sentiment for the SPDR S&P 500 ETF and Invesco QQQ Trust moved to bearish from extremely bearish the previous day. This shift indicates a slight reduction in extreme negative positioning among retail traders, potentially stabilizing near-term price action as the Fed decision approaches.
