Lumentum shares climb 11% on dual bank initiations

Lumentum Holdings closed at $978.54 after an 11.04% gain, driven by new Buy ratings from Deutsche Bank and Evercore ISI rather than a fresh earnings report. The move reflects confidence in optical circuit switch demand and a shift away from copper in AI infrastructure.
Lumentum Holdings (LITE) finished trading at $978.54 on September 8, marking an 11.04% single-day increase. This was one of the company’s sharpest moves since August, occurring without a new earnings print, acquisition, or product launch. The rally coincided with Deutsche Bank and Evercore ISI initiating coverage with Buy-equivalent ratings, a move that resonated during a broader sector-wide rise in AI-optical networking stocks.
The stock is up approximately 108% in 2026, having touched a record above $1,000 in May. While Lumentum reported a GAAP loss per share of $92.96 in the last fiscal year, this was due to a one-time, non-cash charge from equitizing convertible notes rather than operational weakness. The company simultaneously posted a 27.8% GAAP operating margin, indicating that the current market enthusiasm is grounded in underlying operational performance.
Analysts back broad architectural adaptability
Deutsche Bank analyst Gianmarco Conti initiated coverage at Buy with a $1,200 target price on August 31. Conti argued that Lumentum is positioned to win under any hardware architecture, whether the industry sticks with pluggable transceivers or transitions to co-packaged optics. Evercore ISI’s Amit Daryanani opened coverage at Outperform with a $1,100 target the same week, emphasizing that the company’s diverse growth drivers reduce the risk of a single point of failure.
Conti’s conviction was reinforced by a direct discussion with Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston at Deutsche Bank’s technology conference on August 27. Hurlston described a physical limit, or "copper wall," where signal speeds exceed what copper can reliably carry over short distances. At 1.6 terabits, copper is limited to roughly two to three meters, a constraint that makes optical interconnects a physics-driven necessity rather than a preference for AI racks.
Order growth drives long-term outlook
The primary driver behind the bullish ratings is the acceleration in order rates. Hurlston noted that the company’s largest customer has significantly increased orders since the last earnings call, a "huge uptick" that gave management the confidence to raise its fiscal 2028 outlook. The clearest indicator is in optical circuit switches (OCS), where shipments doubled sequentially and are expected to cross $100 million in revenue next quarter.
This momentum has lifted management’s longer-term earnings marker to approximately $40 per share for fiscal 2028. However, Hurlston acknowledged a soft spot in the Cloud Light module unit, stating that while engineering issues are resolved, gross margins have yet to match those of top-tier module competitors. This margin gap remains the key area of scrutiny for investors underwriting the stock's valuation.
Valuation premium hinges on sustained growth
Lumentum trades at a next-twelve-month P/E of approximately 45x, a premium to peers like Cisco (21x), Ciena (33x), and Arista (42x). According to data cited by GN stocks/banks, this premium is justified by revenue that rose 109% year over year in the last quarter, significantly outpacing these mature competitors. The valuation remains sustainable only while growth rates continue to exceed the broader group.
The risk is symmetrical to the reward. A single soft quarter or any delay in the co-packaged optics timeline could trigger a rapid compression of the 45x multiple. With no recent earnings catalyst, the market is pricing in future execution based on current order flow and the structural shift toward optical networking in AI data centers.
