Oracle Posts 30% Revenue Jump Amid Heavy OpenAI Exposure

Oracle’s fiscal first quarter showed robust growth in AI infrastructure, yet the company faces significant financial strain and concentration risk tied to its largest tenant.
Oracle reported a fiscal first quarter where total revenue increased 30% year over year to $19.3 billion. Adjusted earnings per share rose by the same margin to $1.92, surpassing the Bloomberg consensus estimate of $1.75. The company attributes this performance to its Cloud Infrastructure unit, which saw sales surge 121% to $7.4 billion. This segment now represents a critical pillar of Oracle’s future growth strategy, outpacing the broader market expectations for its AI-driven services.
Despite the top-line strength, Oracle’s balance sheet reflects the heavy capital intensity of its data-center expansion. The company delivered 850 megawatts of new capacity during the quarter and signed $30 billion in new AI cloud contracts. These actions pushed its remaining performance obligations, a metric for future contracted revenue, to $664 billion. However, this aggressive buildout resulted in negative free cash flow of $5 billion, forcing Oracle to rely on substantial debt and equity financing to sustain operations.
Forward Guidance Maintains High Growth Trajectory
Management projects that the second quarter of fiscal 2027 will maintain similar momentum, with sales expected to grow between 30% and 34%. Adjusted earnings per share are guided to range from $1.85 to $1.93, indicating a slower growth rate of 21% to 25% compared to the first quarter. For the full year, Oracle reaffirmed its sales target of $90 billion while slightly raising its earnings per share guidance to $8.10. The company also maintained its capital spending plan of $90 billion to $95 billion, a level that continues to pressure its financial flexibility.
CFO Hilary Maxson clarified that the new contract backlog does not require additional capital raises. She explained that the majority of these new obligations are structured through prepayments or bring-your-own-hardware models. Consequently, these revenues and associated capital expenditures are not expected to impact Oracle’s financials until fiscal 2028 or later. This structural delay provides a buffer, but the underlying commitment to infrastructure remains massive.
OpenAI Concentration Creates Significant Financial Risk
The primary concern for investors stems from Oracle’s deep reliance on OpenAI, which accounts for approximately half of its $664 billion remaining performance obligations. This includes a specific $300 billion agreement between the two entities. As OpenAI continues to operate at a loss, the ability of this tenant to meet its payment obligations poses a direct threat to Oracle’s revenue stability. The interdependence is so significant that any deterioration in OpenAI’s financial health could disproportionately impact Oracle’s earnings.
Market reaction has been volatile, with Oracle’s stock experiencing significant drawdowns over the past year as investors weigh the benefits of AI adoption against the risks of funding unprofitable partners. The cost to insure Oracle’s debt against default has risen, reflecting heightened credit concerns. With $130 billion in notes payable and other borrowings as of May, and a recent $20 billion equity offering, the company’s financial leverage is at a premium. The risk is not merely speculative; it is embedded in the core contract structure of its largest customer.
Capital Structure Strained By Infrastructure Buildout
Oracle’s aggressive investment in data-center capacity has fundamentally altered its cash flow profile. The shift from organic growth to capital-intensive expansion has resulted in a net cash burn, necessitating a mix of debt and equity financing. The company completed a $20 billion equity offering in the quarter to reduce reliance on debt, yet the overall borrowing stack remains substantial. This financial posture leaves Oracle with less cushion to absorb shocks, particularly if the projected revenue from its AI contracts does not materialize on schedule or if key tenants face liquidity issues.
The situation highlights a broader trend in the technology sector, where leading infrastructure providers are underwriting the growth of high-risk AI developers. Oracle’s ability to navigate this period will depend on its capacity to convert contracted obligations into stable cash flow without further diluting shareholders or increasing debt burdens.
