Pegasystems Q2 Miss Drives 19% Slide Amid AI Buyer Hesitancy

Pegasystems shares dropped 19% after Q2 results missed estimates, as customers pause spending to evaluate internal AI capabilities against external workflow platforms.
Pegasystems shares fell 19% following the release of its second-quarter financial results, a reaction driven by a revenue and earnings miss against analyst expectations. The stock, which had been consolidating recently, now sits within a 52-week range of $25 to $68, reflecting sharp sentiment reversal among investors.
According to data from GN markets/earnings (en-US), the company posted Q2 revenue of $420.7 million, up 9% year-over-year but below the $426.6 million consensus. Adjusted EPS came in at $0.35, missing the expected $0.43. Annual contract value growth decelerated to 7%, a significant slowdown from earlier in the year, prompting a reassessment of the firm’s growth trajectory.
Customers Pause Purchases Over AI Strategy
CEO Alan Trefler attributed the slowdown to a broader industry freeze rather than product-specific issues. Enterprises are currently evaluating whether to build AI capabilities in-house or purchase established platforms. Trefler characterized token-based, run-time AI pricing as risky and expensive, positioning Pegasystems’ workflow-based model as a more predictable cost structure for clients.
This hesitation has directly impacted bookings, creating uncertainty for the second half of the fiscal year. The company’s ability to recover its stock price depends on whether this pause in customer spending thaws as businesses finalize their AI procurement strategies.
Valuation Reflects Modest Future Growth Returns
Valuation models projecting through 2028 estimate a target price of $41, implying 14.7% total upside over 2.3 years. This translates to a modest 6.1% annualized return, suggesting the stock is fairly valued rather than deeply undervalued. The model assumes an 8.6% revenue CAGR and operating margins of 27.2%.
The current 13.8x exit P/E multiple is low relative to Pegasystems’ historical premiums during high-growth periods. This discount prices in the current uncertainty around bookings. However, the company maintained strong cash generation, with first-half 2026 free cash flow reaching a record $288 million despite the slowdown in new contracts.
Competitive Position Lags Larger Workflow Rivals
Pegasystems competes with larger firms like Salesforce and ServiceNow, though its scale is significantly smaller with annual revenue under $1.7 billion. Its forecasted 8.6% revenue growth trails ServiceNow’s typical low-20% growth rate, which supports the rival’s higher valuation multiple. Pegasystems’ 27.2% operating margin forecast is competitive with Salesforce’s core profile but trails ServiceNow’s more efficient subscription model.
The company’s Pega Cloud segment, which accounts for 57% of total annual contract value, grew 22% year-over-year. This cloud shift supports the margin outlook, but the smaller scale limits Pegasystems’ ability to match the R&D budgets of its larger competitors in the workflow automation space.
