Meta and Intel shares surged Monday as investors focused on AI agent capabilities and advanced semiconductor packaging strategies.

Key points

  • Meta Platforms shares rose 7% as investors focused on its new Muse AI agent and upcoming product demonstrations.
  • Intel shares gained 11%, extending a 278% twelve-month rally, amid reports of Micro LED packaging talks with AUO.
  • Wells Fargo raised its Meta price target to $796, while Intel's average analyst target sits below its current market price.

Meta Platforms and Intel posted sharp gains in Monday’s trading session, with shares rising approximately 7% and 11% respectively. The move contributed to a 1% climb in the Nasdaq composite as market attention returned to artificial intelligence equities. Intel’s latest increase extends a significant twelve-month rally, with the stock up roughly 278% over the past year.

The drivers for the two companies differ in nature but align in their focus on AI infrastructure. For Meta, the catalyst is the launch of Muse, a personal AI agent capable of executing tasks such as sending emails and managing travel. For Intel, the momentum stems from reports of negotiations with AUO regarding Micro LED technology for advanced semiconductor packaging, a critical component for high-density computing.

Meta's Muse agent drives product optimism

Investors are reacting to the functional scope of Muse, which goes beyond simple prompt responses to interact with external applications. Wells Fargo analyst Ken Gawrelski raised his price target for Meta to $796 from $640, maintaining an Overweight rating. He expects the upcoming Meta Connect event on September 23–24 to provide details on new model capabilities and potential transaction features.

Gawrelski noted that while daily active user data for the assistant may not yet be available, management is likely to share usage statistics and popular use cases. He also suggested that Meta could announce its new large model, codenamed Watermelon, during or around the event. This shift in focus from hardware to software functionality is reshaping investor expectations for the platform's utility.

Intel explores advanced packaging partnerships

Intel’s recent performance is linked to broader demand for AI CPUs and specific reports of talks with AUO. The discussions center on Micro LED technology for co-packaged optics and high-density computing. These technologies address the need for faster data movement between processors, memory, and networking components in AI systems.

This development complements Intel’s existing turnaround efforts, including progress on its 18A manufacturing process and High NA EUV technology. The company has also expanded its AI infrastructure offerings to strengthen its competitive position. These initiatives aim to improve manufacturing capabilities and address the specific hardware requirements of modern artificial intelligence workloads.

Wall Street sentiment diverges sharply

Analyst consensus reflects high confidence in Meta but caution regarding Intel. According to TipRanks data, 38 of 44 analysts covering Meta recommend buying the stock, with none recommending a sell. However, the average price target of $763.67 sits only 7% above the current share price of $763.67, indicating limited further upside potential in the near term.

In contrast, Intel holds a Hold consensus among 32 analysts, with only 7 recommending a buy and 23 holding. The average price target for Intel is $117.56, which is below its recent trading price of $120.64. This discrepancy suggests that while the stock has risen significantly, analysts view the current valuation as fully reflecting its near-term prospects.
