Tech Stocks Rally as Fed Hike Uncertainty Fades

Equity markets rebounded sharply Thursday as the Federal Reserve's rate hike shock dissipated, driving broad gains in technology and industrial sectors.
U.S. equity markets closed higher on Thursday, reversing Wednesday’s losses driven by the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% to 7,637, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.7% to 26,418. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.6% to 51,778. This recovery followed a session where all three benchmarks fell after the Fed raised the federal funds rate for the first time since 2023. Market sentiment improved as Treasury yields retreated from recent highs, with the 10-year yield dropping 6.8 basis points to 4.936% and the 2-year yield falling 5.4 basis points to 4.673%. Front-month West Texas Intermediate crude futures also slipped 0.5% to $101.91 per barrel, further supporting equity valuations.
Investors appear to be moving past the immediate shock of the rate hike, viewing the move as a step toward stabilizing inflation. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh stated that inflation remains too high and that the quarter-point increase supports a timely return to the 2% target. With the uncertainty surrounding the policy shift fading, equities have regained momentum. The decline in bond yields has also created an opportunity for investors to lock in elevated returns, reducing the pressure on growth-oriented stocks that are sensitive to interest rate changes.
Nvidia and Ciena Drive Tech Gains
Technology emerged as the top-performing sector in the S&P 500, led by a 2.5% gain in Nvidia. The chipmaker rebounded after earlier weekly declines triggered by industry warnings regarding AI safety. CEO Jensen Huang indicated that demand for AI infrastructure is robust, projecting that the company’s chip sales will double next year. This outlook underscores the continued explosive growth in the sector, which appears resilient to regulatory or safety discussions.
Ciena, a provider of high-speed networking equipment, also contributed to the sector’s strength with a 1.1% rise. The company reported that it expects revenue to grow approximately 30% annually over the next three years. This growth is attributed to surging orders and backlog in AI networking, along with expansion into new markets and customer bases. While investment in capacity may pressure margins in the near term, the long-term revenue trajectory suggests strong positioning against peers in the high-growth tech space.
Generac Leads Industrials on Amazon Deal
Industrial stocks also posted significant gains, with Generac topping the S&P 500 by rising 18.3%. This surge followed the announcement of a long-term supply agreement with Amazon. The deal highlights increasing demand for backup power solutions as data centers and logistics networks expand. Other heavyweights in the sector also performed well, with Caterpillar closing up 2.0% and Deere gaining 2.4%, reflecting broad strength in the industrial complex.
Market Sentiment Shifts Post-Rate Decision
The market’s reaction to the Fed’s move has been swift, with investors focusing on the clarity provided by the policy shift rather than the hike itself. The retreat in Treasury yields has alleviated some of the yield pressure that had weighed on equity valuations. As oil prices stabilize and bond markets find a new equilibrium, the equity market is positioning for continued growth. The strong performance of tech and industrial leaders suggests that corporate earnings expectations remain intact despite the higher cost of borrowing environment.
