New Jersey American Water has secured a $68 million annual rate hike to fund $1.4 billion in infrastructure upgrades, effective September 15, 2026. The regulatory approval includes a mechanism to return over $79 million in PFAS settlement proceeds as monthly credits, which will offset rate increases for eligible customers and support critical maintenance of aging water systems.
According to ROI-NJ, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has also approved the return of over $79 million in PFAS litigation proceeds and interest to eligible customers via the PLUS mechanism. This approval supports the replacement of nearly 120 miles of aging mains and advances treatment upgrades for emerging contaminants, with the company emphasizing that the credits are transparently identified on bills to ensure affordability.
