SP Energy Networks allocates £1.6m to Scottish grid host communities

SP Energy Networks has allocated more than £1.6 million to communities in central and southern Scotland just four months after launching its Transmission Community Benefit Fund. The capital supports local groups hosting the utility’s major electricity transmission infrastructure upgrades, marking a direct financial link between grid expansion and regional development.

The fund was established in April 2026 following UK government guidance issued in March 2025, which created a framework for long-term funding for communities hosting new transmission assets. Allocation has already occurred in South Lanarkshire, South Ayrshire, the Scottish Borders, and Dumfries and Galloway, targeting projects that address local social, economic, and environmental priorities.

Early funding supports local emergency services

A primary early beneficiary is the RNLI’s Girvan Lifeboat Station in South Ayrshire, which received £9,800 to train up to seven volunteer crew members. The grant covers essential skills in boat handling, sea survival, and casualty care, ensuring the station maintains its emergency response capabilities.

This investment is geographically tied to the Mark Hill substation, where SP Energy Networks is executing a major upgrade. The reinforcement aims to strengthen the local network, improve reliability for residential and commercial users, and accommodate the growing volume of renewable energy connections entering the grid.

Strategic expansion drives infrastructure investment

The company’s transmission network development involves new substations at Sanquhar, Mark Hill, Coalburn, and Stranoch, alongside new overhead lines at Stranoch and Chirmorie. These projects form the core of the company’s strategy to modernize the backbone of the Scottish electricity system.

Guy Jefferson, Transmission Managing Director at SP Energy Networks, stated that the rapid allocation of over £1.6 million demonstrates the potential community benefits associated with these network upgrades. The utility positions these investments as a mechanism to offset local disruptions while enhancing grid capacity.

Independent panel oversees grant distribution

Eligible applicants include community groups, charities, and social enterprises. Funding can be directed toward skills development, employability, environmental improvements, and the enhancement of local green spaces. An independent decision-making panel assesses each application based on its potential to deliver measurable social, economic, and environmental benefits to the host community.

By tying financial support to specific infrastructure locations, SP Energy Networks aligns its capital expenditure with local stakeholder needs.
