AI-designed Products Face Consumer Skepticism

New research reveals that while artificial intelligence can improve manufacturing efficiency, labeling a product as AI-designed significantly reduces consumer trust in its sustainability. The gap stems from a lack of perceived human care.
Companies are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to optimize product design, reduce waste, and streamline manufacturing processes. However, a new study suggests that this technological advantage may come with a significant marketing penalty. When consumers are told a product was designed by an AI rather than a human, they consistently rate it as less sustainable, even when the physical item remains exactly the same. This finding challenges the assumption that efficiency gains automatically translate into consumer confidence.
The research, highlighted in reporting by GN technics/ai (en-US), indicates that the issue is not technical but emotional. Consumers associate sustainability with human values such as empathy and moral responsibility. They do not naturally extend these assumptions to machines. As a result, the presence of AI in the design process can inadvertently undermine the very sustainability claims that companies are trying to promote.
Identical products receive different ratings
Researchers from Georgia State University and the University of South Florida conducted controlled experiments to test this hypothesis. In one trial, participants evaluated an identical backpack under two conditions. When described as human-designed, it received an average sustainability score of 4.27 out of 7. When the same backpack was labeled as AI-designed, the score dropped to 3.61. The material, weight, and function did not change; only the narrative behind its creation did. This suggests that the story of production is just as important as the product itself.
The findings were reinforced by live advertising tests. In a campaign for a reusable cup, the version marketed as AI-designed saw significantly lower click-through rates and engagement compared to the human-designed version. Similarly, in a choice experiment involving free toothbrushes, more than three-quarters of participants opted for the human-designed option, despite both brushes being identical. These results demonstrate a consistent preference for human involvement in product creation, regardless of the objective quality of the item.
Trust relies on perceived genuine care
Interviews with product design executives revealed that consumers view sustainability as an act of love and care for the environment. One executive noted that AI does not have children who will live on the planet in the future, highlighting a perceived lack of long-term moral stake. This concept of 'genuine care' was identified as the key mechanism linking AI involvement to lower sustainability ratings. Efficiency is often perceived as cold and transactional, whereas care is seen as warm and sustainable.
Statistical analysis confirmed that this emotional gap is the primary driver of consumer skepticism. Transparency about the use of AI did not mitigate the problem. Simply acknowledging that AI was involved did not improve ratings, nor did it help if consumers were highly familiar with the technology. The bias persists because the underlying issue is not a lack of information, but a lack of perceived intent and moral concern from the machine.
Brands must frame AI with intent
While the perception gap is significant, it is not immutable. The study found that companies can mitigate the negative effect by explicitly framing the AI's role as being guided by genuine care for environmental and societal outcomes. This approach helps bridge the emotional disconnect by linking the technology to human values. However, this strategy only shrinks the penalty; it does not eliminate it entirely.
For businesses investing in AI-driven design, the takeaway is clear: technical superiority is not enough. Marketing strategies must actively communicate the ethical and environmental intentions behind the product. By emphasizing the care and responsibility that guide the AI's decisions, companies can help consumers see the technology as a partner in sustainability rather than a replacement for human values. This requires a nuanced approach that balances technological efficiency with emotional resonance.
