Google's new coding agent offers full frontier model access for free, but it still loses to paid rivals on raw coding logic and terminal automation.

The current landscape of AI coding assistants is defined by a stark trade-off: you can have deep reasoning power, or you can have zero cost, but rarely both. Most tools force developers to pay before they can tackle meaningful tasks. However, Google’s Antigravity breaks this pattern by offering full access to a suite of top-tier models without requiring a credit card. It is not a limited trial or a stripped-down version. It is the complete agent platform, available to anyone who wants to use it.

This creates a confusing choice for developers. On one hand, Antigravity provides a generous free tier that includes unlimited tab completions and parallel agent orchestration. On the other hand, established rivals like Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex continue to dominate in specific technical benchmarks. As reported by XDA Developers, while Antigravity wins on accessibility and workflow flexibility, it falls behind in pure coding logic and system administration tasks. The decision now hinges on whether you value immediate, free access to high-end models or the proven depth of paid, specialized tools.

Free access includes full orchestration

Antigravity’s free tier is distinct because it does not lock away core features. Users get access to powerful models like Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Opus 4.6, and GPT-OSS 120B across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Unlike competitors that gatekeep their best capabilities, Antigravity allows unlimited command requests and a full agent stack. The only limitation is rate limiting, which has tightened since launch, but the fundamental ability to dispatch multiple agents in parallel remains intact.

This setup enables a workflow that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Developers can assign different models to different tasks within the same project. For instance, one agent can use a high-reasoning model for complex debugging while another uses a faster model for repetitive code generation. This parallel processing allows teams to work on multiple aspects of a codebase simultaneously, with the agents running in the background while the developer continues other work.

Browser integration closes the testing loop

A significant advantage of Antigravity is its built-in browser environment. This allows agents to actually open the application they are building, navigate through the user interface, and click through workflows. They can record video walkthroughs or take screenshots to prove that a feature works visually. This closes a gap that text-based tools like Claude Code and Codex cannot fill, as they can compile and run tests but cannot visually verify that an OAuth flow renders correctly in a browser.

Every task generates tangible artifacts, such as implementation plans, code diffs, and browser recordings. Developers can leave inline comments on these outputs, and the agent folds the feedback into the next iteration without stopping. This creates a continuous feedback loop that is particularly useful for frontend development, where visual correctness is as important as logical correctness.

Paid rivals win on raw logic

Despite its free access, Antigravity is not the best tool for every job. Claude Code remains superior in reasoning depth and handling complex, multi-file refactors. Its ability to manage a one-million-token context window allows it to trace dependencies across large codebases more effectively. In head-to-head comparisons, Claude Code has caught race conditions that Codex missed, demonstrating a higher level of logical scrutiny in complex scenarios.

Codex, on the other hand, excels in terminal automation and system administration. It scores significantly higher on terminal benchmarks than its competitors, making it the preferred choice for shell scripting and CI/CD pipeline work. Codex is also more token-efficient, often completing tasks with a fraction of the computational cost. While Antigravity offers a more accessible entry point, developers who need maximum precision in core coding or system-level tasks may still find the paid tools more reliable.
